    Default Power Vision

When I try and run auto tune everything goes good until I try and start bike to ride it and the screen goes back to start, almost like bike shuts off, anyone else ?

Never had that experience ... Maybe contact who you bought it from ... I used to get nervous auto tuning away from home, but, with no issues, I've become comfortable with it. I'm guessing either it has a bad data wire (when it uses the wire for more than power if has issues) or the unit itself is bad. Could also be a bad diagnostic port on the bike too?

Here is what I found so far (I'm a newbie with the PV).
Make sure you have the switches to run. When your PV starts up go to AT and select the tune you want and flash it. Then turn off the master switch for 15 seconds (they say 10 but I don't take a chance). Turn your master switch back on and start the bike. Your PV will come back on and you should be able to go right into AT Screen and see it's enabled and your data log should be active. It took me some time to figure it out also. That and the boxes in the data log screen going from green to yellow to red. From what I was told is red means the tune has all the info it needs for that section. My only problem is I keep getting the messages across the screen. Most of those will go away once the bike is warmed up but I still get them depending how I'm riding.

Another question took bike to Harley Dealer to have dyno. He told me that the power vision was in a recovery mode and had to start from scratch erasing my maps from Jamie, first of all the power vision is married to that bike not sure how he got by that. I am going to talk to Jamie on Monday.

Can the power vision in any way turn off cooling fans ?

Not sure about the PV shutting off the cooling fans for the radiator but I did notice mine does not run near as much and the bike runs much cooler since I put the PV on.

Never had mine go into any type of recovery mode so far. I ran auto tune on my stock tune and saved it to slot 8. I've ran AT on that tune 6 times overwriting the one before to make it better. My bike runs great and gets between 190 and 210 miles on a tank of gas. Reading Fuzzy's comments and saving my tune to my laptop I figured out how to change the speedometer settings and mine is now within 3/10ths of a mile on a 25 mile ride for the odometer and reads the same on my phone GPS for MPH. Like I said before I started with the stock tune and just keep working on making it better.

If the PV was working when you got to the dealer, the dealer put it in recovery mode themselves. Everyone has to push all the buttons & don't know crap about what they are doing.
Read the instructions on recovery & you will see for yourself.

What dealer did you take it to? Erasing maps isn't very difficult, being married to the bike only means it won't flash another bike. A person could go in and wipe it clean if and hose over the tune in the ECM they wanted to.

If a dealer has a mind to, he can hook the digital tech up and put the ECM back to stock. The PV doesn't prevent it from being done. Only one flash tuner I know of which locks the ECM. The TTS, it locks the ECM so the dealer can't flash it back to stock without 1st uploading the .mte file with the original ECM image the TTS saved 1st, this unlocks the ECM so it can be flashed by the dealer. FWIW there is no need for a dealer to flash and ECM that has been mapped with a tuner.

Colonial Harley Davidson did the dyno , when I ran it for a week 600 miles and had no better gas mileage , performance or cooling I opened power vision and seen that my two maps ( original and one from fuel moto ) were gone. Called dealer and they told me when I dropped bike off the power vision was in recovery mode so my stuff was erased.

On my home from trip I noticed a little anti freeze on right floor board , stopped at dealership lead mechanic came out lit cigarette bent over by bike and said yup you have a problem. Next thing he did was open hot radiator cap anti freeze blew everywhere. I called my dealer he said go somewhere else, mechanic said he would wash off bike around back, after hanging up with dealer I walked around back to find mechanic reading book and taking wires and fuses out. Finally ordered him to put bike back together and left. Dealer told me to try and over ride fans did not work so drove another 5 hours 80 degrees plus temps. no lights ever came on. Dropped it off at my dealer Saturday called me to ask about tuner I have no original map to load. He is saying might void warranty. Sorry so long !!!

Been watching this thread closely. I to am new to PV. Map from Jamie came close to my present cams but I can tell it needs an adjustment. What map do use as a donor map to start AT and what happens to the map your running bike with to use AT? My original map was a MOCO download stage 1. I surely can't use this map with PV or can I? I printed the user guide from PV but can't find an answer written in stone. I'd use the original map if nothing else, but that's why I opted for PV hoping to have more choices if needed.
    thanks dan

Why are you not just auto tuning the map that you currently have. It is a good base so tweak it.

When you have the ign switch on to setup the tune mode it will ask you which tune you want to tune, then flash the ECM with that tune, then tell you to turn off the switch & wait for 10 sec.
Restart with the tune screen you are going to either tune or log. Then just start the log to watch it done, or if you told it you wanted to run a tune, it will already be there, just restart the correct screen to watch the tune being done cell buy cell.
Then before you shut the engine down just save the tune to a clear space.
Next you can just re-do the tune you just finished to fine tune it by telling it you want to tune again & select the one you just saved. It will flash that tune to the ECM & do it all over again.
I have been told the PV stays in log mode even if you turn everything off & restart where you left off at shut down. I haven't tried that, I just save the log & download it to the computer to read. I don't worry about redoing the log at restart because I normally redo a tune & re-flash from the PV.
When you interrupt the power to the PV while starting the engine, you will go back to the start screen of the PV. It doesn't have a built-in battery.
Bottom line ...... The instructions will lead you through each step, step by step. Just read & follow them. NEVER try a short cut ! You won't be a happy camper.

I would start by getting in contact with Jamie and asking him for a copy of the map you need. The 2nd thing I would do is auto tune the map Jamie sends you vs taking it to a dealer. I have this bad feeling the folks at Colonial really screwed the pooch on the map they have in there.

As for the dealer stating warranty may be void, he is right, all he has to do is contact the MoCo and its game over for your powertrain warranty.

    Soap Box On:

What folks don't consider when they start adding tuners, aftermarket head pipes, cams, even aftermarket Stage 1 air cleaners. They all can have an impact on the warranty. Harley as the manufacturer is administering the 2 year unlimited mileage warranty which comes on a new bike or trike. There are some things we as owners can do which will void all or parts of the warranty. Adding a tuner, yep, if it isn't a Harley Davidson approved tuner, installed by a Harley Davidson dealer, your powertrain warranty can be void.

When I say Harley approved tuner, the only tuner approved by Harley is the Screaming Eagle Street Performance tuner PN 41000008B, or a dealer download from the digital tech. The down side to this tuner is only canned EPA maps for 50 state legal Harley parts can be used. The map can't be smart tuned, or modified to make performance increases beyond what will remain 50 state legal.

Put on an exhaust system which removes the cat, the dealer can drop a dime on you and have the powertrain warranty void. If they really want to be nasty they could notify the state or federal EPA about you tampering with emissions equipment. Add an Arlen Ness big sucker air cleaner or any brand of aftermarket stage 1 type air cleaners, it could impact the powertrain warranty.

When it comes to performance parts, if you want to keep your warranty, you have to play by their game. Only Harley Davidson and EPA approved parts and downloads, installed by a Harley Davidson dealer. Some dealers turn a blind eye and allow customers to make changes, or tell the customer they (The Dealer) will warranty the modifications. The pitfall of the blind eye or dealer warranty is, be 1,000 miles from home and break down. The dealer you need to get you home, may not turn a blind eye. They just may say sorry about your luck, we won't touch it under warranty, while they call the MoCo and ask what should they do about the situation. The MoCo will also say sorry about your luck.

    Soap Box Off.

Myself, I do what I want and don't worry too much about warranty. If the dealer will fix things under warranty, great. If they won't, fine. But then I don't need the dealer, I do my own work. Unfortunately you have walked into a warranty mine field, getting out of it may be next to impossible. The dealer and Harley Davidson hold all the cards.

Some more thoughts on tuners and tuning. A simple Stage 1 tune is a pretty simple deal, even Stage 2 can be pretty easy for the most part. However, a bunch of auto tune runs does not make a tune. There are times where timing needs addressed, cranking fuel, warm up enrichment, the AFR in the idle area. Does the bike or trike start correctly, does it pop or backfire on decel, does it buck or hesitate when cold and warming up, does it ping or just run hot.

All of these could be parts of the tune which needs tweaked, and not all of them can be taken care of by just auto tuning the hell out of it. Take timing for instance, it can cause both pinging and heat. To much timing and it can ping, to little timing and it can run warm. Go the extreme end of to little timing and the combustion takes place so late, it can still be taking place when the exhaust valve is starting to open. This can lead to exhaust valve damage, which means $$$ to pull the head and have it repaired.

Thankfully, like I said, Stage 1 tunes are pretty straight forward. Now increase compression, port the heads, install some wilder cams. You better know what your doing, it won't be as simple as an auto tune. You may have to tweak multiple tables to get it right.

I'd be real interested to see the map your dealer left you with.

I'd be real interested to see the map your dealer left you with.
great write up and spot on!!

I am with you, the warranty on my power train only lasted 50 miles until I changed the 103" for the 120" motor!! However, I do have an awesome dealership (personal friend of the Master Tech) to deal with.
