Default what gloves do you wear?

assuming you wear them while riding? I've always worn gloves with padding on the palms. The ones I have worked fine on my two wheeler that has a traditional cruiser riding position. But now with the can-am spyder I have a slightly sportier forward leaning riding position. I actually find it pretty comfortable, except I develop numbness in my hands after about an hour. Athough I may add a 1 inch riser to my handlebars, that probably will not put me back into the full upright cruiser riding position. So i'm hoping new gloves are the answer. All thoughts/ideas/suggestions are welcome.

    thanks all!....janetb

Gloves do a nice job of protecting your hands if you end up sliding. I where a nice ventilated pair here in Florida and a pair of Gortex for the rainy cold weather. For cushion any pair with some padding should work.

I had that very same problem with my right hand going numb. I've worn 3 or 4 different gloves - elk skin (very thick), normal deer skin gloves, mesh nylon gloves, and insulated winter gloves; none of which helped.
Installed handle bar risers; cured the problem.

    Janet

If you are experiencing numbness in your hands then I would look at these factors.

Your forward lean is too great and putting undo pressure on your wrists. This will also strain your back as you shift your riding position to center yourself.

    Your grips are too large.

    Your gloves are too padded.

Your hand pressure is too great on your grips. (squeezing the grips too hard)

Your wrists and elbows are an incorrect angle when riding. (drop your elbows down and relax your shoulders like on a two wheeler, adjust your clutch and brake levers so your fingers are level with the top of your hands.)

    Any combination of the above.

Except when it is real cool outside, which is below 55 here in central Florida, I wear fingerless gloves all the time. Same ones for the Stallion or on the M109R. I used the $40 HD ones for years and found that for less than $15, the ones at JP Cycle are just as good, padded and even come with flame stiching in various colors. And I agree that someone needs to look at their riding position if they are getting numbness.

DOn't feel like the lone ranger, Janet, I get painful tingling in my hands, especially my first rides of the season. Too much grip, plus my grips are probably a little big for me. But everything is too big for me.....I have very small hands and can't find gloves that fit right either. My cramp buster works pretty good.

I have a pair of Joe Rocket ladies gloves with gel pads in the palm. Something like that might help you a bit as well. I looked online and can't find the exact pair but there are other with the gel in the palms.
As Ironhorsepilot mentioned the cramp buster is nice to have too.

Thanks everyone! I need to get the 1" riser I have installed, I understand it makes a big difference.

Mr Wizard, thanks! I adjusted my clutch lever as far in as I could last weekend. I haven't ridden much but it seemed easier already. I think you may also be right about me gripping the throttle too tightly. The day this happened was my first day on the interstate during my work commute. I'm still adjusting to having an m/c with this much power & it felt a constant battle trying to keep my speed down. Never an issue on my 250cc.

Joan...a cramp buster, of course. That would probably help w/my speed issues as well. Around here that means the Harley shop, think they'll let my spyder in there?

Thanks for all the suggestions. I check for gloves all the time since I start riding as soon as it hits 40 degrees I can cover several seasons & styles of gloves. I have to wear them, I still have the scars from the first time I went down on a bike, was in my 20's then.....20 years later I heal slower.

In warm weather, I wear a pair of HD gloves with the thin gell pads in the palms. Bad weather, I wear my winter gauntlets. If I need new gloves & the $50 HD price tag doesn't fit the budget that week, I run down to the welding store & get a pair of TIG welding gloves for under $10. They're white leather with brown gauntlets, but a stop by Tandy Leather for a $2 bottle of black leather die fixes that if I don't already have some! Instead of the cramp buster I use the Kuryackyn Iso grips with their "Throttle Boss". More of that "safety chrome" doncha know!!

Another possibility might be bicycling gloves. Especially the Specialized brand--they are seriously padded.

    Janet,

You don't need to go to the HD Store. You can order them on line and they will be there in a few days. Don't get the long narrow ones, get the short wide ones.

If you are having a hard time keeping the speed down, I am sure you must be gripping! It'll get better, I promise!

i wear mechanix gloves. extremely comfortable. breathable. getcaught in rain and they dry very quickly. they suck for cold weather but i have a different cold weather glove for use when needed as well as a thinsulate glove liner.

Grimm -- do you use the "impact" mechanix gloves? They have a gell pad that's about the right thickness. I used mechanix gloves at work, so they were usually too full of grease for me to even get close to the bike with 'em on. My favorite mechanix gloves were from Mac Tools. They seemed to stand up better.

Trikergirl, this link should give you an idea of what they've been talking about:

CrampBuster - The Original Motorcycle Cruise Control

It allows you to relax your grip and rest your throttle hand a bit as you adjust your speed by the pressure of the heel of your hand on the "rest". They come in different sizes to meet your personal needs.

Loves me my Crampbusters! On the Harley, I have an old style Throttle Rocker - works just the same as the Crampbuster. They apparently had a patent dispute, because they changed it, and now the Throttle Rocker is held to the bars with a Velcro strap. To me it doesn't workas well. Hae Crambuster on both grips on the trike. It does wonders taking the pressure off on those long trips.

never tried the impact gloves, but i bet they would be pretty comfortable. i've always cheaped out and used the plain ol' mechanix gloves. no complaints tho.
