New guy from South Texas

OK - my first post here. Two weeks ago I pulled the trigger and traded my 2006 Ultra Classic for a new 2015 Tri Glide. At first I sort of wanted to turn back the clock and undo the deal. But I read the posts about give it 1,000 miles. So now I have 902 miles on mine and I am pretty much used to it.....except still trying to get used to handling curves. But I guess that will eventually come around.

Planning a road trip in a few weeks on the Natchez Trace, through Tennessee and ride the Tail of the Dragon and the Cherohala Skyway. So just curious - does anyone have experience riding the Tail of the Dragon on a trike? Are there any concerns about a new trike rider going on the Tail of the Dragon?

Welcome to Trike Talk from Michigan!

I've ridden the Tail of the Dragon twice, once on a two wheeler, then on the same motorcycle triked with a CSC Daytona conversion. My advice would be to "ride your own ride". Don't ride any faster or slower than you are comfortable. There are plenty of turnouts to let the faster riders go past, or for the slower riders to get out of your way . Enjoy your trip! It sounds fantastic!

welcome aboard. have ridden the roads mentioned several times. Once you get really comfortable you will be pushing the 2 wheelers except the sport bikes on those roads.

How about I give you some of the same suggestions I offer others?

When I am running the twisties in the high country of Wyoming I learned a few things, steering a trike is an exercise in push pull.

Learn to lock the elbow on the arm your pushing with to cut down on fatigue and increase leverage.

Learn to shift your butt on the seat as if you were riding a snowmobile so centrifugal force doesn't affect you so much, plus it plants your foot a little more solid on the floor board.

hug the tank with the other knee.

Try to look as far through the corner as possible (you wont be able to see far on some corners) but it will tend to make your turn smoother and less choppy through over correcting.

If you go off the road, back off 5 mph and try again?

Pcombe - thanks for the riding tips. I think I am already doing the arm lock. Snow-mobiling is not big in South Texas.......but I think I follow your point about the butt shift. Never been on a snow mobile, but it looks like fun!

skuuter - I will send you our trip details, as of now we plan to be in Cookeville on June 23, south Knoxville June 24, then ride the Dragon June 25.

I believe you are not too far away from me, I live on Lake Conroe on the north side of Houston. From your post I got the impression you ride with a group of 3 wheelers in the Austin area? I am trying to find something like that around here, I am officially retired as of 3 months ago, so for the most part the wife and I are ready to go on road trips on pretty short notice. That's what it's all about isn't it???
