Thread: Trying to remove header pipe and could use some advice

    Exclamation Trying to remove header pipe and could use some advice

    This is where I am at right now: I have the 4 exhaust nuts removed and the exhaust flanges dropped away from the ports, I have remove the heat shields, I have removed the bracket bolt near the transmission, I have loosened the clamp that goes to the pipe to the left hand muffler, I have loosened the clamp bolt on the right hand muffler, the o2 sensor wires are disconnected and the zip ties clipped, o2 sensors are loosened.

    Now I get to my problem area. I have removed the forward bolt on the muffler that connects it to the rubber bracket. The rear bolt I can not get a wrench on. Can the muffler move further back to get a flex head ratcheting wrench onto it?

    There is a T40 security bolt of all things I have that loose even trying to get the rubber mount to move.

    What's my next move here? I am so close but can't get the pipe to move off the trike.

    I talked to the welder this morning and he said yes he could remove the cat. I just need to get this pipe to him.

    It took me a while but what I found was if I used a thin piece of wood I could hit the rubber and drive it away from the head of the rear bolt to remove it.
    So now the pipe is ready to go to the welders Wednesday. Overall this much of the work took me 2 hours working on the floor.

    The triglide and free must be a little different. After removing the mufflers, cross over clamp, removing the right side floorboard and the flange. The rear cylinder is removed first then the front. I'm not sure of a rubber mount though.

    reading Bill's post on his headpipe removal he turned the rubber mounts around to make it easier. Mine are firmly mounted into a frame work and are not able to do that.

    I just removed the muffler from the headpipe and had to hammer it off with a soft blow hammer. It was locked onto the pipe from age I think. Tomorrow I will tackle the other side muffler. Now to decide what mufflers to replace them with.

    Default Flex-head box end wrench makes this a snap

    Screwball gave me the advice on how to do this before I even started. it is impossible to get the header pipe off without removing the mufflers as far as I know but I don't know everything.... good luck fearless

    I actually only had to remove the right side muffler(looking from the rear of the trike). The left side and crossover pipe is still on the trike.

    While I have the system down I am going to remove the left muffler to disconnect it from the crossover pipe. I think they both need to come apart for cleaning and ease of installing new mufflers.

    That's the key ... moving the rubber forward or back to allow access to the bolts ... ... when you get that down, you can swap mufflers in about 30 minutes.

    I have a copper anti seize just for that, and for the o2 sensors.
