    Default 40 days

So the first month of ownership is over. I get more excited every day about riding Charlotte. What a wonderful machine. Yes I have ridden a 1330 and it was great, but I couldn't afford a 2014 or newer 1330 RT. The 998 V Twin has all I need as long as I remember to keep it reved up. And it is so fun to run it at those higher revs.

As long as I keep the revs up it gets over 30 mpg which is better then my Gold Wing ever got. It rides so nice and I can feel the road again. This is almost as good as 2 wheels.

So far I have added the Bluetooth dongle and wires from Motorcycle Dave,Spyderpops block off plate,Kuryakan Gold Wing grips and Big Bike Parts luggage rack from Value Accessories and tri pouches to the dash board. Still to come Bluetooth head sets and a gel pad for the seat. When I build up the bank account again I will be adding the Bajaron anti sway bar.

Leaving for Sturgis with some friends on Aug 1.

    I can hardly wait.

OK, thanks, just curious. Think it was the 2014 RT that came on the market with three cylinders. Peg is excited about his 2012, enjoys the ride, and that's the personal bottom line.

Mine is a 2012 and so as far as I know it doesn't need those updates. It has not felt hot at all and I have ridden it pretty hard. Wolf Creek Pass, Indian Canyon and such. Lots of fun

Maybe the 2012 had some upgrade on heat issues. My friend had a 2010 which had some heat upgrade coming for the dealer to accomplish, but he could not wait any longer, it was just too hot on his legs to ride, especially with the hot summer.

I have a 2010 Can-Am Spyder RT now and it doesn't need any "updates" for heat related issues. None of the 2010-2012 RT models had heat issues. The heat issue was specific to the 2013 Can-Am Spyder RT. Can-Am reworked the Spyder RT under the skin in preparation for the 3 cylinder engine and then didn't put the 3 cylinder into the 2013 model. This caused both cooling and fueling problems. The issue was resolved by a recall and owners of the 2013 Spyder RT who have had the Can-Am recall fix seem to be happy with the result.

The 2010 model was improved on in the 2011 and 2012 models which use better suspension components. I have replaced the front shocks with ELKO after market and use an aftermarket anti-sway bar to cure wallowing. In addition, I have added SEAL brand floorboards which turn the RT into a real touring machine. With just the stock foot pegs, it felt like a Goldwing... not bad just no place to move your feet. The SEAL brand boards stretch from front to back and you can move your feet around for comfort.

While the Spyder-RT has quite a bit of room to pack things, there isn't enough room in the rear trunk or side hard bags for a full size helmet.

You can get two 3/4 size helmets in the front trunk (aka frunk).

Its going to take me awhile to personalize my RT; mine was the base model and we will eventually want to get bluetooth helmets for FM, phone and intercomm, the Spyder desparately needs more lights on the side and rear, etc. We actually like the stock seat pretty well so I doubt we will be spending big bucks on an aftermarket seat. All in all, I like the Spyder as well as my former trike, a 97 GW RS conversion. I do spend more time at the big Spyder forum as there is a lot of info there but do miss my old friends on this site.

Saturday I spent the day putting a new rear tire on Charlotte. She had 10,750 miles on the factory original which is also 3 years old. I am leaving for Sturgis on the end of the week and wanted to be sure I had a good tire. On Spyderlovers.com I found a video on removing the rear wheel without disturbing the belt alignment or tension.Well it took awhile but I got it done. I bought the tire from a local tire store and they were also able to mount and balance it with dyna beads. The video spoke of shims on one of the bolts that hold the brake caliper on but mine had none. I found that when you release the parking brake it does scream at you but after a minute or so it quits.

You have a beautiful 1800 trike. I had a Gold Wing trike for 4 years, but sold it to buy the Spyder. I am glad you are enjoying the write ups. It has been fun to ride and a different experience to work on. There is so much bodywork to remove to do anything. My Royal Star RSV was all pretty much out in the open.

Thanks Paul, yeah, I like riding the white beast, and I hear you on the Spyder maintenance thing. Someone said, Honda started with air filter and built the freaking GW around it. Yep, I believe it. Keep on posting, and I'll keep on reading. Happy trails.

Yeah that's the only thing is when doing simple maint you have to take off some of the Tupperware ..But other than that the spyder is a hoot to drive. Last night more people following me with there camera phones while driving on the HWY..It must be the fender lights etc..it makes the spyder pop at night.. The new one I notice is people pull over thinking I am the cops or something.. All I have are fender lights and a LED flag on the back with the trunk LED light..

So far I am really happy with the 2014 RT but the tires stink..5800 miles on the rear and had to be replaced..

Lots of places selling lights I used custom Dynamics on the fenders and my own version in the BRP location on the frunk..

rear has a brake tail light on the rear trunk..with the LED flag on the mud flap..
