    Default Freewheeler Trunk lock

Hi everyone Got me a HD Freewheeler and I love it, I just ran into a problem with the trunk lock will lock and turn to open the rear lid but it does not release the latch so I can't open the lid. Question, does anyone have any idea on how can I open the lid or how can I get the latch to release since the lock is not working properly

Just last week I had a problem. First couldn't get it to lock. Then when I got home couldnt get it open.
I just keep trying and finally got it to open. One of the 2 screws came out and it let the lock turn downward some. Mine was not completely lose on the remaing screw so it held it enough to finally get it open. Look in the manual, there might be a emergency cable some where.

    Default Freewheeler Trunk lock

took it to the Harley Davidson hear in Puerto Rico and they tried but nothing, I called The main Harley Davidson in states and they gave me a control number to give to the Harley Davidson over hear and they are going to talk on Monday. lets see what they say. Based on my evaluation of the lock and the cable on another Freewheeler in the dealer, I think the cable came out of its position and that's why it doesn't open, the lock turns but doesn't pull the latch. The Problem is that Harley didn't leave an access door behind the trunk or under the trunk for these situations. If the cable ever brakes or come out of place there is no way to access the trunk to release the latch. Let you know what they say this coming week.

If one of the screws come out and the other is lose enough to let it hinge it will do the same thing.
That's what mine did but I was finally able to get it open as you haven't. That sucks that the engineers slipped on this one for sure. I guess they will need to come up with something.

    Default Had a problem similar

After a couple of months riding, got home and was going to get something out of the trunk, when I opened the trunk, the latch was laying in the bottom. The screws vibrated completely out. I reinstalled them and didn't think about it too much. A couple days later the same thing happened but I lost one of the screws. Took it to dealer and they found a matching screw and applied locktite to both screws and reinstalled them. So far no more problems.

I wouldn't worry about it for the next 2 years, it is Harley's problem, unless you got the extended warranty then it is their problem for the next 5 years. Just don't put anything in the trunk you can't live without for a couple of weeks

    Default Freewheeler Trunk lock

Well after going out for a ride today got back home and went to open the trunk because I forgot it does not open so I hit the top of the lid three time, where the latch is at on the right side of the Trunk and the lid released the latch. Now that is opened I carefully inspecting the situation and noticed that the cable where the latch is located goes into a small u shape sleeve and it was out of place. I pushed it back in it's location and took a piece of plastic positioned it behind the cable and used some tie down staps to secure it so it won't come out again. Thanks to everyone for your assistance but maybe Harley needs a review of this trunk and make an access door or add a release cable for an emergency like this one. I think the only way to access the trunk latch and open the lid you will need to remove the tire and remove the fender and through the holes of the fender bolts maybe you can access the latch and able to release it. In the future Harley needs to add an access door or a cable in order to be able to release the latch without having to remove the tire and fender. freewheeler owners this can be very costly to you or to Harley if it's under warranty. I attached some pictures of the problem and how I fixed it so that you Freewheelwe owners can make some changes and stap the cable so that you don't run into the same problem in the future. Thank You God Bless

The black wheels are hard to keep clean, aren't they?
Went out and checked things to see how easy it will be to do it. I could not get the cable to come out like yours did but I am still gonna take care of it, just in case.

I really like the silver strips you added.

    Default Freewheeler Trunk lock

Yeap the rims are not easy to clean, Look a the pictures of the latch area, It may have been that it was pushed out of place with items being but in the trunk, the cable inserts in the plastic housing that cover the lock latch, it has a U shape. Anyway better safe then sorry add a strap or two.

    Default First Trunk Lockout

This past weekend I got to experience the trunk lock issue. Called the dealership, they has no idea. This was the first Freewheeler they have seen with this issue. I took in the earlier posts about how to fix it. The tech actually took the time to read it! Luckily all the banging around over the weekend loosened up the screws. The trunk lid was opening about an inch by the time I got to the dealership. They played with it awhile, and got the second screw to release. The cable already had the tie-wrap update, but, they lengthened the cable a bit, checked that it worked well, then reassembled the latch with lots of lock-tite. Really hope it doesn't happen again!

    Default Stuck Trunk

I have a 2016 Harley Trike. I can't get the trunk open. I don't even hear the latch click. Does anyone have the secret or do I have to take it back to the dealership?
