Intercom system

Greetings,

This may not be the right place but it is about my 2012 Voyager MotorTrike.

I bought a pair - rider and passenger - J&M headset plus the lower cords which were the ones I was told I needed. Unfortunately I cannot find the connections on the bike. The little manual indicates they are under the seat. There are two square plugs, one gray and one black. In the same bundle there are two wires with much smaller connectors. While J&M shows lower cord connection cables they will not fit any connectors I find on the bike. I know that kawasaki makes their own system but I also know others have used other brands. Is there a Kawi propriety adapter cable or something. All and any info would be appreciated.

Under the seat/left side cover there should be four (4) wiring connectors. Two large and two small ones, the small ones, white left rear speaker, black right rear speaker. Two large plugs, black, riders intercom conn. and gray, passenger intercom conn.

Thank you Ray.

I found those plugs last night, right where you said. However those plugs are square and the only J&M lower cords I can find have round connections. Is there a conversion plug available? Aftermarket or something I have to get from a dealer? I imagine aftermarket would be cheaper if available but perhaps it has to be Kawi brand.

You'll need to get the pigtails that attach to the square connectors under the seat. These will have the round 5 or 7 pin plugs on the other end to go the headsets. Depending on how the bike was set up from the factory you may or may not need extra components for the intercom to work. Your Kawi dealer can get you the info and parts.

Ozarkryder,

Thanks for the info. After perusing through all of the documentation I could find from J&M it appears I will need some kind of adapter connection or something. Now I will evidently need to call a Kawi dealer. That kind of stinks. I thought J&M type of hook ups were kind of an industry standard AND they show - list a lower cable for the bike to helmet hook up. Unfortunately, in any photos I have found it looks like the lower end of that cable - the bike end is round rather than square. Note that I have only seen the actual cables for the Honda and Harley systems, every other reference is just a picture in a catalogue. If I have to go thru the dealer I figure a simple wiring connector will cost me another $250 bucks. Hopefully, I am incorrect in that assumption. Still hoping someone makes a cable that will fit. Perhaps a call to J&M is in order.

By the way, I am also located in the Ozarks' in Southwest Missouri. I have been a lot of places but I always come back. I think it might be the weather extremes that keeps bringing me back.

J & M, Air Rider, Ed Sets, etc all use the same basic 5 or 7 pin connector, but the wire harness on the bike often doesn't come with the pigtail from the harness to the fitting that connects to the headset. At the minimum, you'll need something that looks like this:kawa headset.jpgor 2 if you are setting up a passenger port, too. Hopefully that is all you'll need. On our 'Wing the passenger intercom connection went bad and I had to replace the part like above. Wasn't cheap.

Where in the SW MO are you, John? I am in Anderson, 30 miles south of Joplin. Going north of Neosho it gets flat and straight, but south and west - that is the Ozarks - roads are twisty with elevation changes. Some great riding in our area. ThumbUp

I appreciate the information. I will check further. Kind of torques me that what I thought would be a plug and play was no such thing. Oh well. I wire and install all manner of little transducers when setting up road tests so I am fairly familiar with minute connections and such but , , , while it could be done, It might be more time and trouble than it is worth.

I was actually born in Neosho, or on Camp Crowder. I used to make it out there quite often - for training purposes. I spent a couple of weekends in the Diamond area at some black powder meets. I was in the process of building a muzzle loader from "scratch" and there were some knowledgeable folks there. And even now, every couple of months I pass thru Joplin while traveling to see the daughter and grandkids in Oklahoma. That whole hilly area there is just beautiful and does have some great riding. I never have ridden the Pig Trail but it is on my list of must rides. A long time back I went to a Buell gathering in Eureka Springs. I forget how many bike wrecks there were but it was a lot. Seems the curvy roads, fast bikes, and too much testosterone competitiveness was not conducive to safe riding. I traded a Goldwing for a Valkyrie at Heartland Honda in Springdale. Great ride.

However, that did not provide my location. I am approximately 35 miles south and east of Springfield. More south than east. On Hwy 14 east of Sparta. Webster and Douglas and Christian county line(s). About the same distance from Ava, Seymour, Fordland, and Sparta but the school district is Seymour. If you plan a ride into this area, let me know and I can show you some roads. Beautiful ride on 125 and a couple of state roads down to Protem and then cross Bull Shoals on the ferry into Arkansas. Absolutely beautiful country around here.

Again, I appreciate the information.

The pigtails that you need are as follows:

Passenger K10400-035 $78.95

Rider K10400-036 $122.95

These prices are from Ron Ayers Motorsports out of North Carolina. About the cheapest dealer on the web.

Thank you Ray.

I guess I will just have to bite the bullet then. I had the Wing and it had the plugs so I guess I figured this would be the same. I did buy the Wing used so perhaps the PO had installed the needed cable connections.

That price is better than the one I was quoted by the dealer. I have not ordered yet but unless shipping is high or I am charged sales tax it beats the local dealer price by quite a bit.

I do want to thank everyone for their input on this. I will get these things on their way.
