heated riding gear?

I have a Yamaha Venture with Hannigan conversion. Wondering if I need to do anything to the trike if I plan on using heated riding gear such as pants, vest or jacket and gloves? Can I just plug into the pigtail for the battery tender??

The Battery Tender lead is not sufficient size to carry the current demanded by heated gear. You need to hook direct to battery, mfg. recommendation, or use another power block with relays to provide power.

I have Gerbing heated liners and gloves and tied directly to battery per Gerbing's recommendation.

One problem they had years ago was the capacity of the charging system to charge the battery while there was the draw of the heated equipment. Honda made good trides to put a high capacity alternator for the job on the GL 1800s.
You want to find out if your charging system is up to "snuff", or it will deplete the battery.

Directly off the battery works well and simplifies the job. Just need to remember to turn it off when ya dismount, goes without saying.

My problem is that i kept on forgetting to unplug it before i dismount.. Pulled the wires out a few times last winter.[Ouch]

I would wire to battery with inline circuit breaker/fuse at battery...

Yeah Fuzzy, you can go from shorts and a T-shirt to heated gear in just a few hours in your neck of the woods.

BTW, great ride you took Kevin and Mary on!! I totally enjoyed that!!

One of the main questions is, how many other things do you have running off your battery. Heated clothing will normally draw more from your battery that lets say a radio or GPS. Do you have a Amp meter on your trike so you can see what the alternator is doing?

Yep ... we got some really sweet riding out here ... most people are just shocked that they can ride so far and only see a few other vehicles .. especially if you avoid the highway ...
