I'd like 2 replace this with something similar. Found something almost the same but it discontinued.

The lower tubes are designed to fit into the heater boxes or "J" tubes so they don't go back all that far. JC Whitney used to sell one like that try there to see if they have a side shot.

Don't have a photo, but from the rear exhaust port(s) the 'muffler can' protrudes 10", plus the tips extend another 6" from the can - 16" overall from the exhaust port(s). As mentioned if you go with this type don't forget to seek out some matching "J" tubes. I'd love to have an exhaust that exits under the motor as you show, but I haven't seen those available anywhere.

Another Autostick trike. I love it!
Don't know how that new exhaust you're looking at would fit on your trike without modifying some sheetmetal around the rear exhaust ports.
I was running a similar exhaust on mine with stock tins, & it even fit ok with the extended autostick specific oil/transmission pump.
Not to discourage you but after I ran it awhile I didn't care for the low hanging look/sound, & switched to baja style mid engine height pipes.
What's wrong with what you're running now?

Well that exhausts been on there since 72 so rust time have taken their toll. They've been repaired a few times. I've seen systems similar to mine but they don't seem 2 be available anymore. I think its cheaper 2 buy one than make it. The parts cost more than the complete exhaust system.

Is the exhaust you have plumbed in using drilled in fittings into the tail pipe?
If so, are they important & do they need to be drilled out to retro~fit onto a new system?
The type 1 VW is such an easy platform to work on.
No need to panic they are very forgiving.

I know this thread is probably long dead, but im hoping for some advice.

my trike has trumpet style exhaust with baffles(like some older motorcycles run) and i was wondering if i could possibly take the baffles out just to get some better sound out of it, or would this damage the engine?

You will be screwing with the back pressure and so will need to re-tune the fuel input.

Do you mean just retune the carburetor? That wouldn't be too difficult, probably need to do that anyway. My main concern is that it doesn't damage the engine.

Okay a lot depends on the exhaust but normally if you free up the flow (remove baffles) you will lean out the mixture. You CAN POSSIBLY also change the torque curve of the engine making for less torque at low RPM's. Yes if you have a carb re-jetting might be necessary. The re-jetting may not necessarily restore the torque at the low RPMs if it's changed. Just saying there are other possible side effects from just removing baffles to get more sound.

I run 1 into 1 headers with no baffles. Love the sound, like two Harleys with open pipes. I really don't think it will "damage" the engine if jetted correct. (2 cents)

With a stock engine and a 28 pict carb, I would say go ahead and try what you like on it (removing baffles). It is not going to hurt your engine, and I doubt you will actually feel any change in the torque or performance. Highly unlikely, but if you should begin to feel a 'flat spot' in power as you accelerate, pop back in here and we can guide you through a rejet/retune on your carb.

Sorry for late response, I was involved in an auto accident. Third time in six years. All three not my fault, all three trucks totaled. Guess I'm lucky to be here, lol.

When I put the headers on the trike it didn't run as good, flooded out with too much throttle, so I ordered a few jets bigger and smaller and started experimenting and reading. Got it running good and haven't done anything since.

So I would also say try and see what happens, If it still runs good, leave it alone and ride like the wind.

Sorry to hear about the accidents those suck!

I am hoping just pulling the baffles out of the exhaust wont affect it too much lol I have a really tight budget at this point.

Look at the color of you plus now. Pull the baffles and ride for a while. A nice little highway trip would be best. Pull the plugs and see if they have gotten any lighter or are indicating a lean mixture condition on any cylinder, If so, check the size of your carb main jet and go 1 or 2 sizes bigger. Repeat the process. The biggest danger for an engine is an overly lean mixture condition.
