Default New Tri Glide Owner with a burning question

    Howdy all!

I am going to pick up my 15 Tri Glide this Friday or Saturday and have a question about covers and how well they hold up when covering the bike while being towed in an open trailer.

Would a standard cover stay on at 55-65 MPH or would it eventually blow off.

I am open to any other recommendations or helpful suggestions from seasoned owners who want to throw their 2 cents in.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I' d be concerned about abrasion on the paint. I never trailered a bike but if I did I think I would leave it uncovered and clean it when I got to destination.

100% the wind would definitely cause abrasion to the paint!! Not a good idea. That is why I have a fully enclosed trailer for my bikes!!

The wind would definitely cause a cover to flap in an abrasive manner. Look at the bright side. Your cars windshield should block any rocks from getting back to the trike.

All great posts. Thanks, you convinced me to not use the cover.

I would use a covered trailer, but the one Uhaul rents that has a ramp isn't covered. I would try to ride it home, but the their is a good chance of rain and my lack of trike experience makes towing it home in a trailer a much better option.

I am buying an almost new 15 (less than 200 miles) from a Honda Motorcycle/GMC/Dodge dealer in Southern Illiniois. It is a long way from where I live so a delivery for the sale price was out of the question. I am not going to say I got the deal of the century, but given the special paint job and low mileage, I did ok.

The cost of renting a trailer and hauling it home is not that big a deal. Just adds to the story!

I think the best explanation I ever heard was that “you don’t ride with a cover on it”

In 2009 we picked up wife's first trike. She had been riding 2 wheelers for 15 years. A bad case of cancer and Chemo left her feet numb. Anyway, we picked up her trike at the dealer 42 miles from home on Thursday afternoon. Friday we left for Las Vegas, about 310 miles. Took it back to the dealer Tuesday for the 1000 mile service.

Enjoy the new toy, ride it like ya stole it

    Dave,
Actually the weather report for this coming Fri/Sat is very good! 62 on Sat
Also, if you're getting trike from a dealer, I'm betting they've got a trailer and would deliver.

Here is a quote from the Harley indoor/outdoor cover page.

    Note

H-D® motorcycle covers are not designed to be used while trailering. Using H-D® motorcycle covers while trailering may cause the cover to tear, possibly causing damage to the cover, motorcycle and sidecar.

Just use caution when loading it on a trailer, not all trailers will allow the Triglide or Freewheeler to load without digging the exhaust into the ground.

DON'T cover it. Get a tandem axle enclosed trailed to protect your investment if towing a long way.

Also be sure and put the security in "transport mode". Otherwise your alarm will run your battery down while you are moving.

'I had to put the pick up back a week. And the dealer is in southern Illinois. Nohow I do it, I have a long round trip.

But on the bright side, I am going to Madison Indiana this Saturday to put some wreaths on veteran's graves. Its a win win for me!

    Probably a good thing!
My bad, on my weather post I see it is to be in the 60's but 40% chance of rain.

There is a cover designed for open towing. Gator Hide covers

They are pricey, but work well and they make them for trikes

DO NOT EVER COVER A BIKE ON AN OPEN TRAILER ! You'll need a paint job afterwards. I seen too many bikes that have had the paint rubbed right off the bike where the cover kept rubbing on it. NO matter how tight you can get it it will rub your paint off. ! Take it from a guy that used to work for a BIKE painter ! You don't want to do that !
