anyone know reason for dropped valve ?

hey guys here's m my situation, was going to buy a 2009 gl1800 trike. While on their way to deliver the trike he stopped at a store to buy something. He had trouble restarting the trike and when he finally did there was a knocking sound coming from the motor. So no deal for now. He toke it to get checked out. He was told it had a dropped valve. Now I'm really wondering and confused about whether to buy this trike even after it gets fixed. Read so many good things about Honda bikes going 150,000/200,00 miles with only minor troubles. Here's what really bothers me, the trike had less then 5,000 miles on it when this happened. Would love to here opions/ suggestion on this.

How many miles on the engine, ''''Not the Trike'''?? 7+ years old and ''only'' 5k miles....

If it dropped a valve it will do damage to the cylinder wall and the head and the piston. Best bet would be a new motor or a low mileage used motor. Dropped valves can be caused by the keeper on the valve coming loose and letting the valve hitting the piston. It could have been the head of the valve breaking off and hitting the top of the piston. Never heard of this in a Goldwing motor.

When they sit idle, the valve keepers will rust to the valve. Then pop out after the valve spring brakes . At least it happened b4 you finalized the deal. Lady Luck is with ya. Keep lookin or make a discounted new engine deal

Idn5up, I think you just hit the nail on the head. Bike had been in storage for a good while. Close to 2 yrs. When you said sit idle just made sense. Don't think I'm buying unless they replace the engine completely.

Probably a good idea. It may have at the very least dented the piston. So if they fix the valve and get it running it would still have an issue waiting to happen. Installing a Goldwing engine is not cheap. Lots of labor plus the engine.
