My wife got tired of watching me clean the Doc Martin boot heels off of the pipes and bought me one for Christmas(after several hints and the part number thrown her way). Not much riding time yet, but no smoked boot heels yet. It seems I would have to deliberately put my foot in position to burn it now. Easy install. Remove footboard, take off rubber top, mark and drill one hole, bolt it on and reassemble footboard. Took about 15 to 20 minutes.
I also have DK's floorboard extenders, but seemed to enjoy the smell of burnt rubber even with them on, so I decided to put this on. I think I am going to be glad I did.
I just finished installing a right side Heel Guard from Carl Miles. It was an easy install ( see link) with just two 1/4" holes drilled into the floorboard. I chose to put a slight back bend on mine, as it gives me a bit more wiggle room but still keeps my heel well away from hitting the pipe.

I opted for the HD guard ~ And as everyone said, got real tired of cleaning the melted boot parts off the pipes. Never had a problem since. I didn't even bother taking the rubber off the floorboard. Drilled the hole from the bottom and slipped the Nut/bolt in ~ Easy as pie. Highly suggest the guard. jc
I also have the HD heel guard with the DK floorboard extenders, one of the first things I did after cleaning the exhaust pipes after every ride, not fun. Easy install and I haven't had to clean up the pipes since.

Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave in a well-preserved body, but to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting...Holy Sh!t What a ride!
I too bought and installed the HD heel guard early last summer. works well and was<br />
a very easy install.
Yep, have the HD heel guard....

I put that guard on almost immediately. But then I extended the floorboards out on inch with a kit. That also moved the guard out, of course. To give me more room, I used a spacer on the front of the guard and a little L-shaped piece of scrap metal on the back to extend the guard back towards the engine by 7/8".
So basically it's like the heel guard stayed in place but the floorboard moved out. I'm people-footed (feet point out) and now I've got the protection and I can put my whole foot on the board.
I added one to the right side cause I left boot melts too, works fine. Although it requires drilling a hole to secure correctly. The two sided tape won't last long. There are several versions, after a while you know it's there, but you'll be trained to use it without thinking and won't tarnish your pipes.
When you get the heel guard installed and need to clean that pipe off one last time, try Heavy Duty Easy Off oven cleaner, worked great, no scrubbing on mine..
