Default Thinking of Installing Harley Garage Door Opener

I'm interested in installing the Harley Garage Door opener on my 2014 Trike from What I have read, purchasing the unit and an optional harness, the harness interrupts the headlight wiring and then there is a transmitter that plugs into the wall(120v) of the garage low voltage goes to opener then by flashing your head lights the garage door opens or closes. Anyone have this unit, interested how you like it?

I have one and I like it. My only problem, not being an electrician, is that when I plug the reciever wires into the garage door, I can then either use the door for the Harley or for the cars but not both. I have the instructions but they are not much help to me.
Works like it says though. Maybe I'll try again to get it right.

    Hummmm......I went a different route, But then I don't ride a Harley.
I ordered a Key chain garage door opener remote off ebay for $12.00 and programmed it to my Garage door opener, (Very easy to program) and it works with my other openers, So I can open and ride in on the Trike or in the Car with different remotes. Nothing complicated or expensive.

There is a after market one that does the same thing it's called "FLASH to PASS" I find that it works perfectly.

That's the route I came from. My problem with it was that especially with gloves on, the buttons were too small to get it to work "on the fly". It is nice to open the door while coming down the street so I don't have to stop in the driveway, take off my gloves and wait for the door to open.

    First world problems huh?

When I first got my Tri-Glide I used a small key chain type remote that I had hanging off the bars to open the garage door. It worked, but I did not really like how sloppy it looked. I wanted to get the Harley opener, but then I ran across the.....Grip Switch GP 1.

It is a simple rocker switch in a housing that replaces the left switch clamp and is easy to operate (even with gloves on) without taking a hand off the bars. The installation was real super easy as well, and I have the receiver box velcroed behind the lower left dash panel so when the time comes to replace the battery it should be a snap.

It was about $100 for the kit. Here is a link to the manufacture Reading Design, but they are available at other motorcycle outlets like JP Cycles as well.

This can be mounted or on a key chain and the button is large enough that you can mash it even with Gloves on. Easy to remove and take it with you in your pocket when leaving your Trike in a public location.

Hide the standard remote anyplace on the bike. Run 2 wires to any kind of switch in a location of your liking. Why spend $100.00 when you can do it nicely for about $12.00. Free if your real handy with stuff laying around. My remote is in my GPS holder on the bars. Stays there 95% of the time. I take it out to put the car gps in when going on a trip.

I have the MO-door in my Vic. I think it's available for HD also. Programmable remote device sits in the fairing and factory style button mounts to the dash. Programmable to most openers.

    To each his own.......

I chose the Grip Switch because I liked the convenience of use, the switch location and the ease of instillation over the more expensive and more involved to install and use Harley kit. And I do not have the expertise to wire a "standard remote" to a switch somewhere of my liking.

I went the cheap route and put the remote that came with the opener in my windshield pouch. Works with gloves and I can remove it in about 5 seconds.

To be honest - I have that worthless 3 pouch on the windshield....I can fit 2 packs of gum in the side bags and my EZ Pass in the middle. I do have my remote in the right hand pouch and with them being magnetic closure it's pretty easy to get to. I just kinda like the gadgets...a sickness

JC, does the EZ-Pass work inside the pouch?

Sorry. Back to your regularly scheduled thread.

It does.....I have it facing the correct way and held in place with my backup bandana. I'm not saying it's never not registered, but I've never had them contact me about non-payment of a toll.....

I just put my remote in my pocket, switch facing out. I push it when I am close...I am REALLY cheap! As long as I don't pass gas...my door stays closed!

That's my way too. Remote in pocket with button facing out. It's also the same one I use in my truck and my company vehicle. I'm even too cheap to buy extra remotes for those rides.

I have to agree with Cavie... I put the extra key fob sized remote from my opener in the small compartment on the right side of the dash. It fits in there along with the flash drive for my music, and the remote stands up nicely held by the foam in there (in the slot). I have had no issues with opening the door and hitting the remote on the fly, even with gloves on.

I looked at the HD opener ($100+) and the Grip Switch (wouldn't fit with the Kuryakin cup holder installed) and decided that cheap can also be an elegant solution.

I had the Harley brand opener and it failed to work more than it worked. The wires from the unit that lead to the opener were so small in gauge, they kept breaking from vibration of the opener and the range of the unit was far less than an door opener remote.

Ended up digging thru the kitchen junk drawer for the extra opener we had. Tore it apart, soldered a wire onto the each of two contacts that operated the door and ran them to a switch (Harley speedometer re-set switch) that I mounted in the dash. While I had the opener apart, I soldered a wire from each battery contact and ran them to the cig lighter wires to power the remote.
By suppling the opener with 12 V from the cig lighter, it only works if the ignition is on.

All mounted and tucked away behind the faring.

No opener to remember to keep in coat, windshield pouch, or have stolen from bike. Less than $15, a little time and no battery to replace in opener.

The HD part number for the switch was 67854-96 and the rubber boot number was 67880-94.
