    Default Whats it worth

Understanding everything is a huge ball park wanting to know roughly where I should start with this trike to get it sold.

I am the second owner my grandfather was the original person to order it. I have every form receipt and every part accept the trailer some of it still new in the box like the fairing and and rear storage box. It was purchased with the rebuilt engine and transmission as a running kit from what I can see but then the trike sat in the paint booth of our hanger forever the body was actually outside for years the gel coat was ruined from sun and the glass broken across the fenders. I never really knew what it was until I found the paperwork one day with the pictures on the brochures.

I dug everything out of the paint booth and started to rebuild it. Currently it runs perfect has perfect compression alternator conversion, disc brake conversion with emergency disc brake (borrowed from gm thanks) currently rebuilding the factory springer and 18 inch wheel and will probably sell it when its finished and road worthy.

I have more pictures just put the one on figuring the guys who know will know and can lend a hand.

Should there be a front brake? There was an option on the order form and a 4 inch drum in the front wheel but this one had a cover over it. Next question is do I want to put one on there? not a trike guy so I dont know please inform. I am a machinist and can make what cant be bought however.

Any info you can offer would be appreciated I see the company has gone out of business

    Thanks Tony

You've got a real classic there. Should be attract a lot of attention when you get it done.
Front brake - that depends on were you are from. Some states require a front brake, some dont. VW trike front ends are usually pretty light, (You'll see quite a few with wheelie bars.) and the front brake doesn't have the stopping power like on a 2 wheel motorcycle.
As for the value of the trike as a whole, condition is the key. Runs great, good. Looks good, great. Both - that's where the value is.
BTW - You say you're not a trike guy. So might this project turn you into one?

As Ozark stated, it really depends on the finished condition. Most of the ones I have seen go anywhere from $1500 to $5k. Of course it depends on the condition again.

Also, as Ozark stated, the front brake needs depends on the state. I wouldn't worry too much about building one if your just going to sell the trike.

As long as you brought up the subject of Whats it worth.......

I have always wondered what my trike is worth.
I though about getting it appraised but that's $100 I do not have

You can see my trike at http://www.3fowlers.com/
The web page is not completely up to date though. My son has not kept it up for a while. I was on his case yesterday to get it updated

    It runs and rides great.
I can pull the front off the ground in 1st and 2nd

    What do you think?
    Thank you
    Bob

IMO you will never get out of it what you put in it. You would be better off selling it as is and save your time and money.

Like all highly customs, it is going to have a wide range of value depending on the buyer.

You find the right buyer, the sky is the limit. Personally, demons and such are not my cup of tea. I can however appreciate the amount of work and time that has gone into your trike. Unfortunately, I've found that most customizations do not increase value. For example, I was planning on getting my trike tour pak painted with the Name "Fat Bottom Girl". My dealer suggested doing it in vinyl sign tape. It is easily removed and I wouldn't take a hit on resale.

In your case, it is a total custom. I doubt Kelly's Blue Book or any other appraisal company is going to have a value for you. If you're looking for insurance value to insure it, I'd total up what you've spent on it and add what your time has been worth and start there. But if you're looking to sell it, you kinda have to start with the insurance value you assigned and hope for the right buyer.

If you find someone that loves your work and the demons, you can probably get that value. If the only buyers that look at it don't like the theme, then they are going to be looking to get it on the cheap, knowing they will have to "redo" the theme.

Please don't take anything I've said as an insult. I have lots of friends that would love the direction you've taken your ride. Like I stated, just not my cup of tea. I lean to the more conservative, mainly white themes, in other words, boring.

    Thanks for the input
No offence taken I know its kind of different and its not for everyone.

I have had some people tell me they think it is offensive and others love it.
Little kids seem to like it a lot though. I guess I'm just a big kid

I cant imagine selling it. I have put to much into it.

I do worry about getting hit by someone else or hitting a deer. I am dodging deer all the time.
I don't know how to prove the worth of the work I have done.
    Thank you
    Bob

    All4Cams,

Please share a bit of basic info on your trike project:

    - How was it, or is it to be registered? (VIN Plate? Manufacturer? Year, Model? First registration as 'homebuilt'?)

    - How will it be conveyed to new purchaser?

    - Motor type info? (Year, dual-port, single port, years/miles since rebuild?)

    - Transaxle - swingarm or IRS?

    - Missing any OEM components?

First look for me it appears to be a Stires model (as opposed to the half dozen other manufacturers that offer(ed) similar body styles - Wilmac/Arizona/Lithia/Trike Shop,etc.). Key evidence to me is mention of 'springer' and '4-inch drum brake on 18" wheel'. Stires was the only manufacturer to offer that combination as I recall.

Definitely a good move to restore the original springer and get rid of the big hydraulics in the photo. (Why 'rebuild'?)

Anywho, these basic bits of data will help in considering a value. Also, may I assume Fairfield is in CA?
