08 Gl1800 Engine rattle maybe HELP

Hi All
It beats me.......
It sounds like a flat metal washer vibrating on metal.
At 40-43 mph in fourth gear in 5th gear at 50-53 mph you can hear it, sounds like it's coming from the engine.
I have R&R everything even a bare naked GW noise is still there.
Went to Honda dealer who I respect the most service manager rode it and said it was ignition detonation mine was more quiet than most advise me to run hotter plugs and 87 octane only. Its a 09 Motor Trike has only 8500 miles on 08 GW.
I DON'T THINK I BUY IT...............
ANY IDEAS ????????? PLEASE HELP.

Welcome aboard bare. Listen to the service manager. You have a classic case of knocking. That is exactly what it sounds like.

If it is engine knock, higher octane gas will fix it. Put some premium in the tank, its a simple test.

What rpm's are you running at? My 1500 will clatter something terrible at low rpms in a higher gear.

The dealer told him to use 87 octane only ??

won't hurt to kick it up a bit on the octane. You will know right away if it works.

Soundin' like "Octane Knock" as the others have stated. My Trike is geared higher than my stock Gold Wing was......I rarely use 5th gear now unless I'm well above 65 miles per hour because of the "Lugging" of the engine and the octane "clatter/knock"......definetly try the premium gas suggestion, although I lose about 1 mpg on premium. I run a tankful of premium through mine about every tenth tank or so just for the extra injector/carbon cleaners in it...."how I know" about the mileage.....

It's been exactly a year dealing with this noise, as miles increased the noise got louder, all my trouble shooting always brought me back to the engine.
Today the clutch started slipping and the noise became louder---AW HA
More than likely the torque nut was never tighten to spec during factory engine assembly.

Ah.....guess it finally diagnosed itself.....

2008 GW1800 MotorTrike. Here in Colorado I always use 85. The last tank I got was from an off brand. It started to knock when I luggedat lower rpm. And it was more pronounced when going around a right hand curve. So I'm going to run some high test through it to see if that cures the problem of the knock. Wonder if the added weight of the trike kit dictates that I use a higher grade?
BARE, did you happen to notice that the noise was worse in the turns?

Maybe I just need to get those rpms up when I go through the turns.

UPDATE...........
Ok the steels and fibers have been replaced, there was always a thumping noise in the clutch basket at start-up when cold now its gone, however the knocking is still there I fill the tank with 93 octane NO DIFFERENCE DID NOT HELP.
No change in turns.
I am thinking that at 50mph in 5th gear is to low (That's when it knocks rattles)if I shift from 4th to 5th at 55 mph NO RATTLE.
Maybe you are right the trike Differential is higher than stock 1800 that and the weight difference is why more RPM shift points are necessary.
Does any one know the how much the gear ratio has changed??

Have same rattle, had another winger listen to it he said it was normal. i listened to his new bike it had the same sound just not as loud.

Mine makes it usually when i'm decelerating, or in lower gears

MotorTrike offers two different ratios. One close to stock and one taller. If yours has the higher ratio, you may well be lugging it at 50mph in 5th gear.

Gold Wing 1800= 2.73 (3.08 was available but no longer offered)

Gold Wing 1500= 2.73 or 3.08

everything else 2.73
