    Default HD Extended warranty... is it really?

    Well, I have now had the '14 TriGlide for two years now, and in that time I have had some warranty issues; clutch master cylinder, seized rear brake pedal, splines worn off the shifter rod and lever, both brake and clutch master cylinders replaced due to leaking, and rear brake light switch stuck on. Now, two weeks into HD extended warranty, I had found that the main heat shield over the cat has cracked the mounting bracket and is rattling like crazy. Went into the dealer, asked the service writer if it was covered under warranty, and he said yes, of course. He then looked me up, and said "Oh, you are under extended warranty. That is listed as a clamp, and those are not covered under extended warranty. That will be $150." I got a similar response from him about the second leaking master cylinder; it could be replaced under warranty, but not extended warranty, so I had to get it done before the original warranty ran out.

    Now I am starting to get concerned. I plan on talking to the other dealer rep that sold me the warranty; he told me that the extended warranty covered everything that the original warranty did, and now I am really starting to wonder.

    Anyone else run into any issues with the extended warranty?

    Yeah, that was how I understood it too, that everything covered under the original 2 year warranty was covered under the extended 5 year warranty. The only caveat was a $50 deductible. To me, that ain't so bad when replacing some things that may have to be replaced (i.e. reverse).

    Of course drive belt and brakes aren't covered, just like they aren't covered on the original warranty unless it's a blaring defect. In the extended warranty, a lot of things like clamps probably cost less than the deductible so, in essence, they aren't covered. That's how I take it.

    Dunno about the heat shield...I think that should be covered....it does not seem that the bracket would be classified as a wear item.

    If you have replaced your headers, then they may deny it...blaming it on the non stock headers for the bracket breaking...had that happen to me once on a bike.

    But I do know that I had a leaking master cylinder replaced under the extended warranty on my Softail just last year.

    I would call Harley Corporate, and/or another dealer and see what they say.

    EVERY Dealer has take off heat shields laying somewhere within the building.

    Starting bid $43 for a new complete set of shields

    I have a 2012 triglide, have had three volt reg replaced under warranty, so a few months latter my shifter arm was loose, tried to tighten bolt myself, would not budge, so went to stealership and they said the arm was not stripped, it was just the loose bolt, oop's not coverd under ext war, so 109.00. bucks to fix a loose bolt,,so now my ext war is overwith,it seems to me that unless you have a MAJOR break down, the ext war aint wort a shit, imho,

    If ESP's were not profitable to the MOCO and/or other manufacturers, they wouldn't offer the product. Like anything mechanical, there are some units that tend to be troublesome and most others that have very few major problems after the warranty period. If you happen to have the trike that is troublesome and you have some very expensive parts break while under the extended service plan, then it is like hitting a mini-jackpot. For some of us, the knowledge that we have limited exposure beyond the initial cost of the service plan is worth the price of admission. Limiting my post-warranty costs to $50 or $100 per repair provides me with good piece of mind given that the price of the TGU components are only getting more expensive each year and my exposure is locked in for a fixed period of time.

    As the Capt. said. It gives me piece of mind, especially on the trike. I've had the ESP on my last 3 bikes. Haven't lost any money on either one. Major problems were new trans. So far just a couple small problems on my current TG (2014) but I have 4 more years to go and if it's like my last TG (2012), I'm going to have at least one major problem.
    I'm almost retired so don't have the money to get it fixed if something goes wrong.
