    Default Rod Ends

A while back I changed the rod ends that hold the brake calibers in position. The original ones rattled quite a bit. I installed ones that had zerk fittings in them. They were from Aurora. I have found that unless you keep them greased, they too would start rattling. I removed them and installed teflon ends. They are quite a bit tighter and don't rattle. I'm leaving on a 2500 mile trip in two weeks. I'll report how they work out. I rode about 25 miles and they seem to be pretty good.

The model numbers are MM-6T and MB-6T.

Two right hand threads and two left.

Yea Rick I changed to the zerk ones and your right they do rattle just as much if not more.

I will wait on your report on the teflon ones.

Mine rattled right from the get go even with new grease.

    Default Rod Ends:

I'll tell you what I did to eliminate some of the rattle. One design deficiency is, the bolt that connects the rod end to the fork is an all threads bolt. So you have a threaded bolt going through a machined surface, which is a recipe for slop. I cut a rubber wedge from an old shock washer and inserted it in the gap between the rod end and the fork. I ran a #6 long screw through it and washer on the bottom so that it would tighten against the mount. This keeps the slack out of the rod end between it and the bolt. My rods do not rattle with this mod.

I just got back from my trip. 2487 miles on a lot of rough roads and a lot of twisty roads with ups and downs with a lot of hard braking. The heim joints are still tight with no rattling. This was all done towing my 1992 Bushtec trailer. Just for info, I averaged 30.6mpg. This was from cruising down the highway at 70-80mph to on and off the throttle, a lot, in the twisties and up and down hills. I wish it was better, but I'm not complaining.

The trip was in California. We started in Phoenix and headed for San Francisco. We hit San Rafael the second night and went across Sir Frances Drake Blvd to CA-1 and then out to Point Reyes.

If you've been out there, you know this road is very rough in spots.

From there we headed north up to CA-299 east over to Red Bluff.

Then we headed southeast to Yosemite and Sequoia on a lot of very twisty back roads and on to Isabella Lake.

A bunch more twisty roads and back to Phoenix.

It was 105degs heading into Red Bluff and 115 when we hit Parker, AZ. We left there at 4AM to avoid the 114 yesterday in Phoenix. 8 days and 7 nights and the Stallion ran great. Rick

Sounds like you had a great trip, we traveled part of it last year and the scenery was breathtaking. I had to replace my heim joints this week because one of the broke on me while on a trip in TN. I replace mine with chromoly from pitstopusa.com and with shipping they cost me $60.00 and as of now they are quite.

I just ordered some chrome moly ones. After hearing of one breaking, I wasn't comfortable with the OEM ones. I do not know what the rating on the OEM one's is, but these chrome moly ones are rated at over 9,000 pounds. I fixed my rattling problem with the mod above.

Do you have a brand and part numbers for what you ordered?

This is a mod I did to eliminate the rattle between the heim joint and the connecting bolt to the fork. I have a small rubber block inserted behind the heim joint. The end of the small bolt seen in the bottom picture pulls the rubber block down tight against the heim joint.
