Default Helmets can be a pain in the butt or they can prevent a headache!

Found this photo and thought I would share. Ouch is the first thing that comes to mind.

Fake is the first thought I had viewing the picture. That was done with a belt sander. Never seen anyone, including Superbike or Moto GP racers slide that far without changing position even from 180 mph.

Studies show that most helmet contact is the bouncy type ... unless someone got their head stuck under the bike ... I'm also thinking FAKE.

Don't know if it's still true ... but used to be ... a few years back ... 51% of motorcycle fatalities were wearing helmets. 49% were not. The difference was attributed to broken necks from bouncing on the helmet.

I've had three motorcycle wrecks in my 50 year "career" ... never involving another vehicle. All involving nature. Hit a chipmunk ... went down. Hit sand in a curve ... went down. Hit a tree limb that fell across the road ... stayed up .. then went down. In all three I never put a scratch on my head or helmet. Only wearing a helmet for the chipmunk encounter.

Just Saying ... so don't flame me.

Back in 2006, a friend & I riding our two-wheelers were headed down the Blue Ridge Parkway below Roanoke and a deer came out of the bushes.

Thank God we were only doing 35mph and not in a hurry.

My friend was about 100 yards behind me when this happened to him but he lived to ride again.

His new ride was a Trike.

    Default Helmets

Yes I admit, when I was young and stupider, when riding in Ct. or Pa. , the helmet came off and the do rag went on. Didn’t like the feeling of it flopping on the head, not to mention how many I left on the road.

However after finding a comfortable helmet, plus being bald , it’s a full time item for me now. Stones , bees , and even car parts will hurt ya, even on a trike. It’s your choice , your cranium.

I just have to ask how does hitting a chipmunk make you go down? Must of been a big chipmunk.

On a bike a helmet is a good idea , On a Trike its iffy ....In a Slingshot its down right dangerous, If its a heavy full face helmet....And not used with a HANS Device...Which i'll bet none are...When i took a test drive in one the dealer said i had to use a helmet..Insurance Regs.. So he gave me a full face helmet and when i had to make a hard stop i though it would snap my neck...IE; Newtons first law of motion......

Just curious why would it be hard to hold your head back in the slingshot and not on your trike. Are you saying the seat position, or the slingshot just stops way quicker than anything else you're used to driving.

Because you are holding on to a steering wheel strap in [Shoulder harness] a bucket seat...And it does stop on a Quarter instead of a dime [Adding for inflation]...Your feet are flat on the floor and your arms are braced on the steering wheel....Hence the bobble head affect...On a bike/tike your body still has some forward motion to compensate for the helmets weight ....

Well ... if your on a 65 sporty in a Paco hard tail frame with a long a$$ springer front end ... and your in a turn leaning just a tad ... then you hit the chipmunk ... quite easily actually

The important thing to note ... hitting a chipmunk is like hitting a pad of cow dung or any other thing that becomes greasy.

Ok that splains it. But with a roof on a three wheeler u don't need a helmet do u? I thought jersey made it a non requirement back when they had those little 3 wheel mail trucks?

Yes and No each state makes up its own rules New Jersey as long as I have a roof and windshield and the seatbelt on i don’t need a helmet’ but as usual most local cops aren’t up to the regulations I already had a discussion with one cop, I won the Discussion but it’s truly hard to make him agree without useing a get out of jail card ! Arrogance of the bage I guess! I do keep a cheap beanie helmet on the seat next to me just for those occasions 📞

Well, I guess so since most riders / co-riders are wearing a helmet.

Like when Crown Vics and Fomoco were being blamed for high numbers of officer fatalities … when most officers were in a CV at the time. NTSB did a lengthy study, CVs actually fared better than Caprices or Plymouths of earlier years … Ford was working on safty, using equal size / wgted CVs as bullet cars.
