I have an 02 GL1800 the fog lights went out just after getting the bike. So I read some info found the relay bypassed relay with a jumper wire fog lights work and right side hi beam is out. My guess was because i pulled the relay out to jumper across wires. I pulled bulb and tested wires I have 12.10 Vdc at the plug then metered inside plug also 12.10 v to make sure adapter is good and at light I have 12.10v but the light wont come on. I replaced relay with new from Honda still only have 1 hi beam and fog lights turn on during low beam and off during hi beam. I did check the connector the green wire and blue wire. I used my multi meter to check continuity/tone when hi beam switch is off its open circuit when engaged it tones out across the connector. I installed a new bulb H7 last night with the same results.

Thanks Rick T.

Rick, the only thing I can think of is the ground (negative return path) must be missing. If you have 12 volts at the lamp connector and the lamp still does not work there just can't be any other cause. Use the continuity function on the green wire to bike chassis. I bet you don't have tone.

Good luck. I wouldn't spend a ton of time chasing a missing ground. Connecting a new wire to the lamp input for a chassis ground point may be a lot easier.... :xszpv::xszpv:

I haven't checked green to chassis ground. I did however go out this morning checked voltage at socket then installed new bulb while bulb is installed there is no voltage on the green blue wire. I missed something else.

Rick are you telling us that with the bulb removed you have 12 volts on the socket contacts but with the bulb in place you do not? :xzqxz::xzqxz:

My first question would be where are you connecting the negative meter lead while making these measurements? If you are using the green wire of the socket then that might verify me previous response. Check for 12 Volts between chassis and the blue wire. If you have it then check between that same blue wire and the green wire at the bulb connector. If you do not read the 12 volts it is because the ground wire has lost it's connection somewhere. If you read 12 volts across the blue to green wire with the bulb out, the bulb should light up when plugged in. If not,, either the connecter, bulb, or wiring is bad.

Again, Good Luck!! :xszpv: :xszpv:

That is correct I just checked green to chassis i got tone. I made a jumper wire from neg side of battery to socket. I connected bulb into adapter plugged into socket bulb still not working while connected to battery ground and blue wire.
Check for 12 Volts between chassis and the blue wire. 00.00 Vdc while bulb while bulb was in.

Rick, I just went out to my shop and got the shop manual for 2001 GL1800 (2002 is the same). If power is applied to left high beam through pin 19 of connector C9, then power is applied to the right high beam bulb. Again, your problem must be right there in the right side connector, bulb, or wiring. Have you checked the bulb itself with two jumper wires directly to battery. Remember to wipe the bulb off really good any time you touch it.....

It will be interesting to hear what you finally find. :xszpv: :xszpv:

If you want to talk this over, shoot me a PM with you phone # :)

------------ UPDATE-------------

Maybe not !! The '01 manual has two conflicting diagrams. One shows the left and right getting power at the same time from the same place. The other diagram shows power coming from two different places.. Talk about confusing!!!! :xzqxz: :xzqxz:

I'm glad you found the bad relay Rick!! Now you just have to get a new one in and installed. I try real hard not to ride after sunset so not having high beams is usually not an issue for me. Taking the seat off to replace the relay won't be too much of a problem I'm sure.

Riding season should be in full swing up there soon so you may have to ride with one big eye... :D :D

Ride Safe my Friend :xszpv: :xszpv:

I have to give a super big Kudos to Jerry after he called me during his dinner to walk thru checking the relays under the seat to find and fix my troubled lights .*
