Tap Broken Left Side Panel

Fellows, I broke off the central tap on my left side cover (black lower section) on my 2012
Goldwing.
I tried mixing the two part "JB Weld" and leaving it sit overnight without any luck..........

If I need a new panel I'll need to cut it back to fit around the Roadsmith front fender
as my conversion people did..........bummer

Any ideas out there besides ordering a new panel?

I sure could use some ideas.

Shot in the dark here... Without seeing the tab, Maybe you can weld [melt] it back together with a soldering iron. Ive repaired plastic panels that way a few times...

I had a broken "boss" off a side panel (the one that slips into a rubber grommet) and repaired it using the black abs plastic glue mixed with some "slurry" from black abs plastic pipe. Sand the panel down to get rid of any paint/dirt/oil. It has held for a year so far.

+1 on the black ABS cement. Make sure you get the real deal - Black ABS cement, not multi-purpose or clear ABS glue. I think the black ABS cement has ABS plastic dissolved into it.

I have built up a side panel tab by carefully drilling a pilot hole for a screw in the bit that was left after the tip of the tab broke off then covered the screw with with ABS cement. I then filed and sanded the new tab to fit the grommet. On the 1500 we had it lasted years and was still holding when I last saw that trike.

I have also repaired cracks from the back side of panels with a sheet of fiberglass mat and the black ABS cement. A pretty common problem on the GL1500 Goldwing trunk is cracking at package rack mounting holes if one is installed. This comes from putting too much weight on the rack or using the rack as a handle, as the trunk lid is pretty thin. I fixed that by putting a layer of fiberglass mat and and saturating it with the black ABS cement.

I did 2 layers, and that lid was very solid, never had a problem again.

I had similar problem. I took a bolt and ground the head down so that it was flat and thin. I took the battery bracket loose and put the bolt through it and then drilled a hole in the side panel. Then I put the panel on and put a chrome nut on it (cap nut, no hole in the nut). Now I don't worry about it coming off. Just a thought. I will upload photos when I get home this afternoon.

Just an idea to save a few $$ and time.

I'm assuming here "Home Depot" or "Lowes" would carry ABS black plastic application.


My biggest fear on ordering a new part, (besides the $100 + cost plus shipping) is cutting the
back section to fit the Roadsmith fender.

​The stuff I used was Oatey's ABS cement #30999

Yup, that's the stuff. I got it at Lowe's. More places have it, but Lowe's is closest to me. Again, make sure it is the black ABS cement.
