    Default GL1800 Emergency Relay Pack

Several years ago a friend and some other GL1800 owners were out west touring when my friend had a relay under the seat go bad preventing his bike from running. I don’t recall which one and he has since passed on so I can’t refresh my memory. A recent experience with one of our members got me thinking how good it might be to have spare relays (especially if you were going to wonder off some). My friend and his buddies verified which relay was needed by swapping from one of the other bikes then spent four days waiting for the correct relay to arrive before they could continue their travels. They could have gotten a relay from the local auto parts store but it did not have the “Flyback Diode” included so wisely chose not to purchase/install that replacement relay.

The purpose for the history account was simply to demonstrate how great it would have been if even one of those guys had brought along emergency replacement relays. Depending on year manufactured, there are four or six relays/fuses that would cover many failures. I checked with several online parts places and found Cyclemax.com and Partzillia.com has the best prices for the entire Emergency Relay Pack.

With the summer touring season upon us, it is food for thought. Here are the lists……

It would be nice if there was a list that put together the relays into a real emergency pack. Containing the most common relays that go and their location.
I know its asking too much.
    For some, me for one.
Other then the fuse box. I wouldn't have a clue on the 1800 where they even were.
Ive never had the seat off. I wasn't aware anything was even under it.
I did on the 1500 engine though. Rebuilding my 99 Valkyrie I changed them all.

Are the relays in the same place on different conversions? For that matter, do all conversions of a given year from the different kit makers use all the same relays? I would think yes, but...

Unfortunately Jay there are too many variations to say this or that. Some of the relay failures would be obvious but others not so much. Lucky for that friend I mentioned he , like me, was an electronic tech that also loved wrenching his GL1800 so identifying the culprit was the easy part. That is why I put the list I did together. At least having the relay once it was found would prevent unwanted delay. If you want to talk specifics a bit shoot me a PM with your phone #.

    I'll help all I can.

Don, all GL1800 relay panels are in the exact same place. They have noting to do with the trike conversion so the installer has no reason to even mess with them. Depending on the GL1800 year and options, the relays used differ. '01 thru '05 all use the same relays and '06 and newer all use the same. Total cost to have all the relays in an Emergency Relay Pack would be less than $30 I'd think. To me if I never use them it will be money well spent. Mine are already on order.

I just ordered the set for my 2009. Excellent information Jerry. I really appreciate your time and effort in assisting fellow members of TT.

I hope you never have to use a single piece of the pack Terry!!! Out here in west Texas it could be a very long walk to civilization so for me it is so worth it (I might be able to walk a mile on a good day). Others, probably not so much but that is part of the reason we do what we do...

Jerry, that is why we purchase insurance. I hope I never need either, but it makes great sense for me, because I get into wide open spaces where help can be a major inconvenience to find if needed. Thanks again for helping me prepare for the unexpected.

Jerry of course Its just wishful thinking on my part. Electronics whether bike or car related is my worst area of knowledge. Anything someone comes up with will be good for me so why not ask for the improbable sometimes?? Cant hurt.

    10-4 Jay.

Seriously, you know I don't mind helping out. Some days I just don't have time but usually I can set down with service manuals and hopefully do more good than harm. Invitation still stands.

Jerry I don't expect you or anyone else to do any more then you have.
Listing the parts itself is more then one could ask for and Im sure was a lot of work on your part.
Me not having the knowledge of relay systems would for instance buy and use a over rated relay to temporarily take the place of a lesser valued relay.
While not always the safest or best way to go. A 8 amp fuse or relay will to me. Can temporarily take the place of say a 6 amp rated relay or fuse.
Its a temporary patch in my book to get home. Everyone at one time or another has used a 15 amp fuse where a 5 or 10 belongs.
Any short that would pop a 4 amp breaker should within reason pop a 6 amp in its place under the same circumstances. Id take the chance of not doing more damage temporarily. And I have in the past used foil from a pack of cigarettes or a gum wrapper to get home.
