Default Thinking of trading in for a Spyder...

Currently own a 2015 Harley Freewheeler trike. Thinking of trading it in for a Can Am. Thinking of an F3 and would like recommendations from actual Spyder riders. Looking for something basic so I can add what I'd like. I ride mostly day length rides but may do some longer touring. I've read reviews but the best source is always the "horse's mouth". Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!!

I've posted the same question under the title RT Limited. Have gotten several answers back. I too am looking at trading off my 2015 FreeWheeler for a Can Am. I've also have a post going on SpydersLovers.com forum. There's a lot off information, but remember it's a Spyder Forum, so some comments are pro Spyder just like any other specific forums.

    Good luck.

Lots of great information on both sites.

I suggest test ride a Spyder on whatever models and get your own opinion.

    Maybe even try a conversion.

I went from a Tri to a Spyder and see no need to go back anytime soon

I will say the 1330 Spyder is one smooth machine..

The basic F3 is a good machine that you can add a lot to, to the make it just about any kind of machine you like. And the F3 sitting position is much more motorcycle like. It's a little lower than the standard Spyder. It is winning over a lot that didn't like the original just because of that seating position.

I personally don't care for the looks of the front end but it's growing on me. I really wish they would make both versions lean in corners. The technology is here to do it. But I guess there are just too many bugs in it yet. Don't know if I'll live long enough to see it in production even. But test ride it.

I think you'll like it after you get used to the differences between the Spyder and traditional trike.

It does take some getting used to. And if it still feels twitchy that too can be corrected. The 2012's and below had to have the after market fix to feel good but the newer ones are much improved but can be improved even more.

There are two things I really like about the Spyder.

The ride is hands down the smoothest of all the trikes I have ridden.

The reverse is awesome on them. Strongest one out there.

Something to think about is the Can-am dealer network. They are few and far between in some areas. May not be a problem around town but if you have a problem while traveling, it might be hard to find help.

    Also most if not all Can-am dealers are Muti- Brand Dealerships With only one Mechanic Dedicated to Spyder's.. Been there seen that.....But like everything else in life' If you don't have a breakdown;

Have you considered Gold wing Conversions ? You say you may do longer touring, I hear G.W are the most comfortable especially riding 2 up. I don't own one , but all my research seems to be consistent.

    FleshWound,

I have a Tri Glide and decided to get a used 2015 Can-Am F3-S as a more sporty trike. The F3-S is definitely more sporty and FUN in the twisties than the Tri Glide. However, for my 67 year-old frame, the F3-S is significantly less comfortable for longer rides. I have installed a BRP backrest and foam handle grips which makes it much more pleasant but still find that for long days, the TGU is MUCH more comfortable. The 1330 Rotax is a really nice motor with lots of horsepower and torque and can return mpg in the high 30's to low 40's depending on how you ride it. As others have said, you ought to ride and F3 and decide for yourself which one is best for you. I like both of my scoots and will keep both of them.

I know some like the F3's other like the RT models..

For me the RT is more of a touring bike and I can ride it for hours compared to the TRIGLIDE.

I cant speak for the F3..

Trikermutha, I think the RT is the bomb for long/smooth rides. However, I am able to to do 700-800 mile days fairly easily on my TGU. In June, I did 4/10 riding days going over 700 miles. The other days were more like 550-650 days on the Tri Glide. I have to admit that the 1330 Rotax has terrific torque/horsepower and is smooth as silk with a rorty sound when you jump on it but not like my Harley in terms of sweet sounds.

I was opposite.. I couldn't ride the TRIGLIDE more than a hour at times..When it got hot out so did my right leg area etc.

The parts were another problem..So I went to the darkside..

I guess its all to rider preference.

Trikermutha, was your Tri Glide a pre-2014? The older ones would reportedly darn near scorch your right leg. OTOH, so did the Can-Am Spyders pre-2014 until they sorted out which way the wind was blowing.

Yo Bob, good one. Recommend using reverse if you want that Spyder to move.

I switched from my FreeWheeler a little over 2 weeks ago. The Free was hot and the ride left a lot to be desired, even after a DK Custom lift kit. I ride most of the time with my wife on the back. Switched to a RT Limited and haven't looked back since. No more heat on legs or feet, handles like it's on rails and the ride is outstanding. I also loved my Harley sound, but it's all about the comfort and ride. If you can't enjoy the ride, then you may as well quit, and by no way are we ready to quit.
I switched to the dark side and have no plans to switch back!

First Timer, Congrats on making the switch. The RT Limited seems like a much more sophisticated trike in terms of suspension/powerplant than the FW. I liken my TGU to my Harley "tractor" and my F3-S to my "sport trike". I like both of them equally well but for very different reasons.

I don't think my wife would EVER ride on the back of my F3-S whereas she is OK with 1-1.5 hour one-way rides on the TGU as long as there is food and/or shopping at the other end of the ride.
