New Air Filter

I have grown accustomed to the look and feel of the stock 103 Rushmore air cleaner cover, but I wanted a little more oomph. So I opted for a DK 606 HiFlow (naked) air filter kit along with a pair of their brass Outlaw Breather Bolts.

The installation was fairly straight forward, but I changed things up a bit when it came to mounting the stock Rushmore cover. The instructions suggest using the stock cover bracket with 3 supplied spacers and bolts. I tried this method, but the filter and cover were noticeably farther out (1 1/4") from the motor than with the stock filter, and I could not touch or hug the tank with my knee. So I decided to try mounting the cover directly to the K & N air filter element. The button head supplied with the stock air filter cover is too short, so I just used a longer bolt and a thick rubber washer. I also taped the inside of the outer weather strip to the cover so it would stay in place.

Now the cover is nice and tucked into the motor, so it feels and looks just like stock. I have not had the chance to ride with it much yet, but it has a different sound now when I roll onto the throttle, and if I gas it in mid range.....there is a very nice new GROWL

We rode up to San Pedro yesterday for the Lobster Fest and gorged ourselves with succulent and delicious buttery Lobster, then rode back down to the OC Fair and ate chocolate covered Bacon, deep fried cream cheese and Bacon Bombs. Yum Yum.

And along the way nothing vibrated loose or fell off. So far I like the new sound. Next I will explore opening up the out end to complete the symphony.
