Sounds like the plastic push rod guide is worn out or broken.
Any type 1 I have ever seen the push rod is held in by the plastic guide.
As in ..... the guide goes in first, then the rod, then the pump. Not counting gaskets.
If you are trying to get the rod in first I suppose you are just lucky that it has not fallen through into the cam gear galley. Not much fun splitting a case just to fetch out a dropped part.
You do have a type 1?

If the plastic guide and block are not broke, then I would have to believe that the fuel pump push rod is bent.
It would really help if you could take some pictures of the push rod laying flat on a surface and pictures of the guide block.
So I am just wondering why use a manual pump?
I just put a block off plate on mine and I use a electric pump.
Is there some advantage of a manual pump I am not seeing?

what kind of regulator are you using , having a hard time cranking mine after sitting after warm seems to be flooding electric pump no regulator.

thanks so much bought one today hoping this stops my hard starting after she is warmed up and left setting 10 to 15 min.
installed the mr gasket regulator set at 3.5 30 min. ride let set 10 min. cranked right up not a good test yet but a lot better than what it was doing thanks again for the help.
