    Default Windshield slips

Replaced my windshield recently (F4 +2), followed the install instructions and everything seemed okay.
Recently I noticed that the right side (from the riders seat) of the windshield seems to slip down slightly after riding, about 1/2" or so. The left side seems to stay in place. The w/s is in the full up position when this happens.

I've rechecked the bolts, etc and seemed snug. What holds the w/s when you put the w/s height levers down?

Any ideas what I need to recheck?

What bike are we talking about? I thought you had a GL1800 but your profile say Valk... I can send you pages from a GL1500 or GL1800 service manual, if you shoot me a PM with your email address...

    Jerry,
It's on the GL1800 (Thought I changed my profile to the GW).

When I bought my F4 +2 I remember the instructions saying that the windshield could not be adjusted. Are you sure the bolts that hold the shield are still in place on the right side? It is worth pulling the cover off and checking. Let us know what you find out. Good luck.

Not trying to cause issues Fred but I thought the +2 I had on my '06 was adjustable so I went to their site. Here is a quote "This shield is for the rider that is looking for a combination of wind protection and stock adjustability. Our +2" model retains the same stock angle and adjustability while offering an additional 2" in height and an additional 1" in total width". When the OEM shield on my 2015 starts showing ware it will be replaced with a F4 Custom.

To tighten the levers(thus more pressure on the shield) you need to remove the mirrors.
Also the +2 is adjustable, the +4 is not

Good research Jerry. I was working off a 3 yr old memory of installing mine and I must have confused adjustability (if that is even a word) with something else. Thanks for the clarification. Hey, speaking of F4's has anyone applied polish on their F4 like a lot of us did on other brands?

    - - - Updated - - -

Bingo, that is where I got confused. I have a +4.... ( I knew I read that it couldn't be adjusted somewhere).

I know about that 3 yr old memory stuff !!

Yes on the polish. When I had the '06 I polished it regularly. I either used Turtle Wax Express Shine or Lemon Pledge Furniture Polish. Just depended what I was using at the time. Since I do not carry Lemon Pledge any more I guess the Turtle Wax is my go to polish.

Had a similar issue with the F4 on my 2012 gl 1800 and as it turned out after much fuss and taking it apart twice that all I had to do was to reset the mechanism that holds to windshield from slipping down. Very simple, raise the windshield all the way up, then lower all the way down until you hear it slick and reset, then as you raise it up slower, you'l hear it click into each setting until you get all the way back to the top again. That's all my needed, I felt so foolish... since this was my second gl 1800.

Absolutely DO NOT use polish or wax of any kind on an F4.. Use either F4's cleaner or Windex.

Gee, I guess the 100,000 miles I put on that F4 before I sold my '06 was pushing my luck. Man I'm glad I sold before the windshield fell off...

The height height levers is what hold the windshield in place. 1) Raise the height levers 2) Pull the mirror on the side that is slipping towards the driver seat 3) Peel back the rubber gasket 4) If I am remember correctly there is a 6mm nut directly in line of sight, tighten down a couple a turns (Clockwise) 5) Engage height levers and make sure windshield will not move by pushing down from top. 6) Push mirror back in original position and re-install gasket.

    Hope this helps

    Thumbs up F4 maintenance

Not to worry. I used the Honda cleaner on mine the first time before I "read the directions" - it's a guy thing.

    From the F4Customs website:

Wax-based or oily-type polishes or cleaners will inhibit the optical clarity and rain-shedding ability of F4 Customs Windshields. These cleaners will not cause harm to the shield, but may produce a light film on the windshield that could be hard to remove. This film allows microscopic particles to embed in the film, thereby creating surface tension that prevents proper rain shedding. Please, no used microfiber cloths or laundered towels. For best results use F4 Customs Windshield Cleaner & Paper Towels.

The oil based cleaners do seem to leave a "smear" layer on the shield, hard to clean off. I now keep a small spray bottle of Windex in the trunk with some paper towels for cleaning the w/s.

    The question begs:
Do you use the original windex or the ammonia-free windex?
I have seen a warning post on TT at some point saying not to use the original with ammonia.
But the F4 website did not designate which windex product to use.
Which is best to use on the F4?
    Thanks.

I sent an inquiry to F4 Customs. Will let you know on the Windex question.

Don't over do it as I once did and cracked the windshield. This is a cam and if overtightened will put too much stress on the windshield. Come up on the adjustment gradually until it just holds the shield up and no more.

Don't raise it to the top position. Use the next lower position and the windshield won't slip.

I use the best glass and window cleaner made.......Perfect Glass at Bed Bath, and Beyond. I'll wait on the polish thing until we hear from F4. Don't want to do anything to impair this great windshield.

Default F4Customs answer about cleaner - from another thread

    F4 Customs

Thanks for these comments. I was asked what you can clean the F4 with and that answer any cleaner you want and paper towels. We suggest you use vinegar and or rubbing alcohol once a month to get the road grime and cleaner residue off for the best in rain shedding.

    Don

Itdoesn't address ammonia based cleaners directly. It sounds as though they would be okay.

Still waiting on a response to my inquiry.
