    Unhappy Kury H-T shifter problems

    2008 GW/RS

    I have been reading previous posts about the pluses and minuses of the Kury Heel Toe shifter . I too have been having problems with upshifting. I would miss the shift numerous times from 1-2, staying in neutral. Fast shifts are problematic, never know what may happen.

    At first, thought it was maybe the boots I was wearing not hitting the heel pedal correctly. But different footwear proved that to not be the problem.

    I really like the floorboards, and had a H-T shifter on my Valkyrie before, loved it, no problems.

    Has anyone tried a different brand of H-T shifter that seems to work better? Add-On has a H-T shifter with floorboards available.

    I am also considering going back to a stock shifter (trike came with the Kury shifter.) Cost about $120 for the whole setup.

    Can I continue to use the floorboards with the stock shifter?

    Thumbs up Soimetimes you have to learn from mistakes

    This is one of those times you scratch your head and have to say you made a mistake, but it all turned out well.

    When I had my Valkyrie Interstate, I used Mobil 1 15w-50 oil and it seemed to run like a top. No problems at all. The Rattlebars Heel - Toe shifter worked great. So, when it came time to change the oil on the GoldWing, I used what I had on hand - Mobil 1 15w-50. I didn't think twice about using it.

    Then I started having trouble with the Kury heel-toe shifter.

    So today I drained out all of the 15w-50 and put in Mobil 1 10w-40 (per the manual) and went for a ride. First thing I noticed was the motor seemed quieter (?). But as I went thru town, doing numerous shifts up and down and starts from stoplights, I felt that the shifts seemed easier. Not as clunky feeling as before.

    I tried a few "hot" starts, winding out the tach, and it seemed to shift just fine, nice and precise.

    So, live and learn. The manual says 10w-30 and 10w-40 weight oil for the GoldWing. Believe it!

    I use the Kuryakyn heel-toe shifter on my GW and love it!! Took me a little while to learn how to use it but I don't have any issues with it anymore. Instead of letting the heel peg lay flat I turned it in the opposite direction. After that my problems were resolved. I wear tennis shoes 99% of the time. Make sure of your heel-toe shifter as to where you place your foot. If I don't have my foot in the right position I have trouble shifting from 1st to 2nd. (I get too much heel on the shifter causing it to hit the trike floor board.) Hope this is not confusing to you. Before you change it back to the stock shifter try your foot positioning first.

    I think you can take the heel-toe shifter off and use your stock shifter with your Kuryakyn floor boards. You will have to take the floor board of the trike to get to the screw in the back.

    Try that and see if that don't work for you!!

    I went for a ride last night. I do believe my problem was using the 15w-50 oil as it now seems to shift just fine for me. Seemed to go thru the gears very easily, no problems going from 1-2 (although it did "clunk" once or twice).

    It was much smoother shifting now. I wouldn't have thought the small difference in oil weight would make that much difference.

    I have a size 9 shoe and I think the shifter is more for bigger feet. I do find myself having to move my foot backwards (more than on my Valkyrie) to hit the heel pedal.

    Default H-T Shifter

    If you have a size 9 foot that is probably a big part of the problem! The Kuryakyn H-T shifter is long from toe to heel. You're gonna have to stretch that foot out a little bit longer. lol. I wear a 10 1/2 and that was somewhat of a problem for me when I first started using it. You'll get used to it, just takes a little time. I still have trouble with the heel part of up-shifting every now and then. Usually get too much heel on it and it hits the floor board on the trike kit. It will come with time and you'll learn to it. I sure do!
