Default Check these tubes Gold Wing

When was the last time you drained the PVC tubes on your 1500 GW bike . If you are asking what they are then you need to do it. Remove the lower left plastic on the 1500 gold wing the ones behind the shift lever , If you look you will see 2 plastic tubes with plugs on the ends . Get a pan place it under the bike and remove the plugs. and then put them back on them. They are full of ucky water.

So did anyone find anything in the tubes? If you only read it and didn't open them up you may end up sucking all that crap back into the motor. They are filled with Water,

No it is a Gold wing thing . They are from the breather . A friend over filled his trike ( he put in 5 QT of oil ) when I asked him Y he said my car takes 5 .... So much for doing your own wrenching . Anyway the tubes filled with oil. The design of this is on a long up hill climb when Vacuum is high( remember the old cars with VAC wipers 1950's ) when you went up a hill they would stop. Ok well when you create enough Vacuum it sucks oil out of the tubes and burns it. Well guess where his extra QT was ? Every time he accelerated he would smoke so bad you would loose him in the smoke. The liquid in the tubes comes from the PVC ( Positive Crankcase Vent ) made up mostly of dirty water vapor. I don't know how other makes deal with it.

The 1800 does have one on the left side instead of two like the 1500. I can lay down and look up under the left valve cover and get to mine. You could possibly need to remove the lower half of the cover (the half covering the spark plugs) to access it.

Be a good time to extend the tube so it can be reached without removing the cover.

Hey Rowdy. I've been thinking about extending my tube on my 06 1800. I've got running boards that go up around the lower cover and it is a real pain to get that cover off. What did you use to extend it? I was thinking of a male to male hose barb with a longer length of tubing down below the running boards, then putting the plug there.

There is no pressure in the tube to my knowledge . Barb connector or a piece of metal tube and 2 hose clamps , i may extend mine too.

I actually haven't extended mine because I can reach it where it is. A piece of tubing the size of the one on it now with anything to couple them that the tubes will slide over tightly will work.

You can extend the vent tubes on any of the Motorcycles that have them....run em' farther toward the back away from Your tire and leave em' "open air vented"........not what the EPA intended, but the system used for years before government emmission intervention......never need condensation or oil residue cleaning..........

    Thanks skuuter. I hadn't thought of that.:wtg:

Only thing I wonder about the unplugged theory . If I remove my oil filler cap on my CAR it runs terrible . A bad PCV valve will do the same thing.

If you leave them uncapped on the 1500 I am reasonably sure that you will be bypassing the air filter with the air coming through these tubes.

PCV Systems are a vacuum vent system designed to prevent the emissions from going out into the air to meet EPA laws. You can eliminate the PCV valve, etc. and "open vent" an engine (not EPA approved) as was the case for decades with the old vent tube/breather caps on engines. Later designs have included EGR valves to recirculate the exhaust gases and keep re-burning them in the engine cylinders.

There should be no "air draw" into an engine from anything that is a "vent" or "vent tube"....it should be a low/no pressure area or blowing out, depending on the type engine venting system being used. Vent tubes are generally/primarily used as collection places for milky oil residue from condensation. Companies cap these to furthur enhance the EPA's bans on polluting the ground/air. Race Vehicles are still "Open Vent" because it is still the most effective way, and as of yet, still not regulated......

I changed the engines in a 93 motortrike a couple years ago and made it a point to trace these lines but as time would have it, I have slept since then. If you will go the 4-17 page of the shop manual it shows the air filter housing. The tube joint is the tube from the crankcase. The number 3 tubes are drains if I remember correctly (looks that way on the drawing as well). As you can see, the drain tubes are beneath the air filter. If there is positive pressure here, I would think there is a problem. The location below the air filter , in my mind, would allow unfiltered air into the system if left unplugged.

I do know one thing for sure if they are over full the engine will suck stuff out of them and thru the carb. my friend overfilled the crankcase and he smoked up I-84. We drained the tubes and it stopped

I guess I need to look at an actual Gold Wing 1500 here one day. Looking at the Pics it looks like the drain tubes are tied into the Crankcase Vent Tube (CVT) System. If this is the case, the CVT blows crankcase pressure outward, and using the air box for a collection center to be drawn back into the engine to be burnt in the cylinders/same for the air box drain residue. Still looks like it could still all be un-capped and "open air vented"......I will try to look one day first hand, I have several local Friends with 1500 'Wings.....THANKS for the Manual Page Number......:wtg:
