    Default External breather system

I know there has been a lot of discussion about the external breather system DK Custom products sells, and I would like to install one on my 2015 Ultra TriGlide.

My question is where to install the catch can on the bike. I know how to hook up the hoses, but not sure where the best place is to route the hose that attaches to the catch can.

Have any of you done this on a stock Rushmore air cleaner, and if so can you post a picture of it ?

I would really appreciate any help you guys could provide.

I played with this too.Gave up.I could not find a discrete place for it.Either I could see it or it banged on something. So it just vents to the ground. At least it don't blow a pile of oil like my old shovel does at times.Like when she's been sitting for a while.

Like you...I'm all ears and open to ideas.

Mine just vents under the trike also and I have not had any oil drips yet. But I do like the looks of the catch can DK sells. You can see it plainly, but it fits right in with the motor as far as I can tell from the pictures.

I have the chrome catch can under the breather and the backing plate all the hoses for sale if your interested. I think the catch can was 50.00 the backing plate is the stock one off a 2014.

Below is not a photo on it with the Rushmore cover, but it would work the same (less of the hose will show with the Rushmore). It stays stationary, and will not bang around. (I have close to 20K miles with this set-up on my Tri-Glide)

Here is a photo of where Jim put his, below the right side cover-

For a long time I ran mine below the rider floorboard. It is completely hidden, unless you're on the ground looking up. There is plenty of room inside the floorboard bracket to route it there easily. That is where Devin runs his on his Street Glide also. I looked around for some photo's, could not find any. But if you look at the space between the frame and your floorboards, you will see there is a lot of room there.

Thank you very much for the great information I really appreciate it.

Guess I will position the catch can under the air filter because it looks like the best place.

I am doing this because of an issue I had during the summer. Took my bike to the local dealer to have it serviced.

Installed a K&N air filter about 500 miles prior to taking it in. Told them not to mess with air filter because it was fairly new.

Mechanic checked it anyway, and when he reinstalled the filter he pinched the vent hose that goes into the back of the filter

between the throttle body and the filter.

Needless to say I blew out 1/2 quart of oil after a 300 mile ride. Topped off oil and rode back home. Same thing, down 1/2 quart.

Checked service manual for possible high oil usage causes, and pinched breather hose was listed.

Removed air filter, and that is when I saw that the hose was pinched causing pressure to build up inside engine and puking oil out.

Inserted hose back into filter, and oil usage stopped. Amazing !!

And that is why I want to install the external breather system to ensure this never happens again, and to keep all the crap out of my throttle body and cylinder heads.

Lawless, I have the EBS system with each hose running to a catch can mounted on my front left down tube with two separate hose bib fittings that accept a hose from each head. The catch can also has a petcock at the bottom and a filter at the top. I have drained the catch can into a container to show "non-believers" the **** the normally goes into their TB's and everyone is absolutely amazed!! This is the second set-up I have installed on different bikes (last one was on my 2008 Ultra w/120r motor), so I am definitely a believer.

The substance is a "muddy tan goo with some watery liquid" separated from the goo, which is basically a water vapor/oil vapor mixture. You will not regret the EBS system install and Kevin's systems are awesome for a DIY person.

    Take care,

    Roger

    Thumbs up

Thanks Roger, that's good to know that it will definitely make a difference.

What have you used to clean the throttle body and remove carbon from the tops of the pistons after installing the external breather ?

Saw the pictures on DK Customs web site showing all the carbon buildup on top of the pistons after a few thousand miles.

Since I ran the motor w/o this system for about 4 - 5 thousand miles, I have run two containers of Seafoam and one container of Techron thru the fuel system. This was over the course of another 3 - 4 thousand miles and not all at once. These cleaners not only address the carbon deposit buildup but also cleans/maintains the injectors as well. Although there are other products that work as good, these have been my choices. They also clean/maintain the fuel injectors as well.

Thanks a million Roger for the great information. I have also read that Marvel Mystery Oil is good for cleaning the injectors and carbon buildup. Have you ever tried it ?

That is almost the exact spot I mounted mine. Has worked perfectly. <knock on wood>

I use a product called Berryman's B-12 Chemtool several times each year. Walmart sells it. It has kept both my injected 2014 TriGlide and my 4 carb 2004 ZRX 1200R Kawasaki. Both cycles run perfectly. I also use it in my 2 stroke power tools.

I also run 1/2 quart low (cold check). 24k+ miles and my breather is still stock.

I had a Spyder [08] And they were notorious in filling the air box with engine oil, I solved the problem by doing two things. One was putting a sugar size piece of porous foam in the breeder tube, And two' Running a 1/2 quart under the recommended amount... With my Sportster 'Victory and Tri-Glide i just keep it 1/2 quart under... You''ll notice i said Under not Low.. The word Low scares some.. The proper way to keep the oil level using the dip stick is between the halfway and 3/4..Trying to keep at the full mark will cause blow-bye.. Especially at high rev's.
With most engines [Providing they don't have a leak] oil will seek its own level ...So by keeping at the full mark every time you check your oil 'You''ll just be blowing it out...
Kinda Like when i had a 68 440 worked Charger if i tried to full the gas tank with the engine running the tank would never fill....

Yea Lawless, I have heard of this product (nothing bad!!) but have no experience with it. I think there are several products out there that will accomplish the same thing - i.e. deal with the carbon build-up and clean the injectors. I'd just pick on and run with it.

    Good luck and ride safe!!

    Wink

Thanks guys for all the helpful information. I ordered a breather kit with the catch can from DK last night.

Also picked up a bore scope inspection camera from Harbor Freight today for $65.00. Pretty good display on it.

I will pull my spark plugs and have a look at the tops of the pistons to determine how much carbon is built up on them, and then try some of the products you guys have recommended to remove it.

Don't think I will be disappointed by installing the breather kit. At least I will be keeping all that crud out of the throttle body and combustion chamber.

    Thanks again gentlemen.

Sorry, but I have one more question. What did you use to plug the hole in the air filter where the stock breather hose went ?

Hole is close to 5/16", and I was thinking of maybe a rubber or nylon plug.

A rubber plug will work, make sure you put it in with the larger side to the Outside of the filter.

RTV is what we use. It forms into its' own rubber plug. Just make sure to leave a nipple on it, so it cannot get sucked into the intake.

I used the RTV (it was a suggestion on DK's page, or the instruction sheet),I snipped the tip of RTV tube small enough to fit into hole, and filled as much as possible. Worked great.

Im looking forward to a follow-up post with pics from the bore scope....been curious about that myself.

Also, I don't know if you got the drill & Tap setup, but if you didnt, and have trouble finding a 1/8" NPT tap, hit me up and I'll send you mine (it's not one I'll really use again, glad to help someone out)

Thanks for the offer Thor, but I just bought the pre-made kit that will fit my Rushmore and don't have to drill or tap. Really appreciate the offer though.

Will definitely try to take a couple of pictures of the bore scope images and post them.
