Default Enclosed Cargo Carriers vs. Cargo Trailers

http://http://www.etrailer.com/dept-pg-Hitch_Cargo_Carrier-sf-Enclosed_Carrier.aspxTo the Stallion owners, I'd like to have your opinion. What do you think of installing an enclosed cargo type carrier to the Stallion's receiver hitch, in lieu of buying/using a cargo trailer? We have a sponsor, Etrailer.com, that carries quite a line of these hitch mounted cargo carriers, both enclosed and open type. I'm sure that there are advantages and disadvantages to both means of carrying one's cargo.
If you have photobucket (it is a free program to join), you can upload your picture there. Be sure it is of medium size (easily done in photobucket). Then click on DIRECT LINK under the picture which highlights the URL for it. Copy this URL. Return to your post, click on the little yellow square with the mountain in it and paste the URL in the box that opens up. When you submit your post, the picture will be there.

From what I can gather, everything discussed and linked to on this thread will not work for a Stallion due to the sheer weight of the empty carrier. The posted tounge limit on the Stallion is 100lbs. Every product I had seen exceeded that before putting the first thing inside. That is why we have spoke of the aluminum open models here in past threads, or the ones with wheels (trailers). Both stay safely wihthin the posted tounge weight.

I have spoke of the Rivco aluminum rack that is large enough to carry several sutcases, and folding chairs but light enough to leave you plenty of tounge weight. Although this rack is rated at 35lbs, I think that is due to it's design for a two wheel motorcycle, not the stable stallion. I have stood on this rack before, with no flex or bending. They are pricy, but they are light and alumnimum is expensive. If anyone is interested I am willing to sell my for $150.00+ shipping.

They run $270+ shiping from the link I have posted below.

Some of our members have welded metal ones, and they were cheaper (much cheaper to make, but they were heavyer.

Now you can get a rivco, and then buy a plastic storage container from Wallmart and bolt it to this rack or a metal one, we have spoke about that too, but remember, what ever you do, you are limited by the 100lbs tounge weight.

I had a friend weld a 2" x 6" reciever tube to the Stallion hitch (after removing the ball). Then I bought the aluminum 49 x 24 x 4" rack from Harbor Freight. It only weights about 35 lbs. Then I cut off some of the main bar so it would fit within a few inches of the rear of the Stallion and this also cut down on the weights as the main tube feels as heavy as the rest of the rack itself. I also added some lights, but, not required. Lay in a couple of suit cases, lock them in and go. Get to where you are going an it comes off with one pin/lock and usually will fit behind the motel door out of sight. Less than $125 in all. I've used it for about 12,000 miles now and will again the end of August for a trip to WV, OH, Tenn, back thru the Dragon tail on the way back to Florida.
I just got back from a 3500 mile road trip using the Rivco 18" x 30" carrier.

We put a duffle bag and a smaller tote bag plus the Stallion cover on it and I think it was probably in the neighborhood of 60 lbs. Agree with Mattel that the 35 lbs weight recommendation is for a 2-wheeler. We had our body shop take off the license tag plate(since our tag was not being obstructed) and re-aligned the lights. It was very bright.

We had no stability problems and no problems with turns, etc. Did take a trial run with an empty suitcase the week before our trip. We drilled some extra holes in the frame to accommodate bungee cords and I added some reflective tape on the sides. Be careful when washing it as the edges of the metal on the tray inset are very sharp.

I had looked for a luggage rack but the one I ordered didn't lay flat enough. Thought the Harley Tour Pack rack was too heavy although size-wise it would have worked. In the end, I didn't need it.

I hope my photo attachment worked.
