I had a Bridgestone Batleax 45 put on the front of my trike. I only have about 3K on it. I don't ride in the rain a lot, here in Az, but when I have there has never been a problem. The shop that put it on said it should be reversed and they do it all the time, so that's the way I went.

I'm getting ready for a front tire replacement on my trike and am trying to make a choice. I've gotten 28,000 on front tires when my Goldwing was 2 wheels using Metzler. During the past several years I've seen several Metzlers lose chunks of rubber and won't use them again.
The primary function of the rear tire is acceleration and the front tire braking. The rear tire has a limited braking function. If you look at a bike with directional tires, the treads run in opposite directions. Reversing a rear tire mounted on the front just puts the treads in the correct direction, plus lessens the stress on the tire's overlapping belts while braking. Attaching pictures of directional Avon Venom rear tire I just had mounted in reverse direction on our trike.

Why would you use a rear tire in front? I cannot come up with a reason to do that on my ride.

Your bike still leans, so you wouldn't want to use a rear tire in front as you need the shape and structure of the usual front bike tire. With a traditional trike and the fact that it corners more like a car wheel does, the rear tire (same size as the usual front one) works very well and gives extra rubber on the ground for a much longer life. Those who have moved to that option swear by the handling and longevity.

I would love to see the math that shows that a front tire on trike with a rake kit is the same as my Tacoma's front tires! Two things make tires come apart; a defect in the tire, or using a tire contrary to its design.

Immediately upon Triking a 2-Wheel Motorcycle, You are forcing the 2-Wheel Motorcycle Tire to perform tasks it wasn't "exactly" designed to do. The Tire now has to perform the task of "Totally Steering" the Trike. "Lean" will no longer be used as the main and helping factor. Front Motorcycle Tires tend to have smaller radiused treads, and more flexible sidewalls than their Rear counterparts. Triking a 2-Wheel Motorcycle also puts more load carrying responsibility on the Front Tire (I've checked this using Race Car Wheel Scales using my Trike and a stock 2-Wheel Gold Wing). A stock front tire is up to the task, as far as safety, but a Rear Motorcycle tire with it's extra Tread Rubber, Stiffer Carcass, and Wider Tread Radius will give You More Mileage, Quicker Corner Turn-in, and a Slightly Wider Contact Patch.....

    Skuuter,
Very nice answer.Be interesting to know the numbers and also the difference between a trike that is raked vs,
    . a non raked model.
    Thanks for the info,

Thanks.......I'm at work and don't have the exact "total" weight numbers with me, but I do carry the difference around in my brain of raked and non-raked.......My Trike: 2010 Gold Wing 1800 with a Motor Trike IRS Kit on it with a 4.5 Degree Rake Kit. It had stock rake and trees on it when I first purchased it. Later I added the Raked Trees after riding 3 different ones belonging to Friends that had Raked Trees on em'...Raked Trees on a Trike, in my opinion: MANDATORY...!!! The Trike, full of fuel weighs 1,264 lbs. I scaled it on the Race Car Scales while stock, then later, raked. The Frontend scaled 173 lbs lighter on the frontwheel with the Raked Trees....pretty substantial percentage.

Now, for the "odd" thing I inherited after raking...before, there was only about 6 lbs difference between the Rear Wheels (right side heavy) now the left rear shows 21 lbs heavier than the right. This has absolutely no effect on anything, but it's there....and no, nothing is out of plumb, etc. From Racing Cars for years, this is not an uncommon occurance on the scales though.....

New rear tire up front at 40 psi is super...... Front end is responsive, high speed cornering is no issue, and no longer shift body weight in fear of high speed flips.

I have the MPA rear tire mounted reversed.
The first one I had 28,000 miles on it and I now have my second one on with only 3,000 miles on it.
Never heard of MPA's coming apart.

I'm thinking the run em in reverse info is seriously flawed info. Sure you can do it but the info I've read about it sounds screwy at best. I'm running my BT45 as any normal tire would be and don't expect to have any problems.

Some run them in reverse some run them normal,so far from what I have seen it doen't seem to matter.I have run them both ways with no dicernal difference.I am running an MPA now on a 1500 GL and it is really nice.Have about 3000 miles on it so far.

Got about 8K on my BT45. No wear at all so far.

I do have a friend with a 2 wheel Gold Wing. Talked to him today. He now has 36K on his BT45. I guess that might be one reason to use a rear tire on the front by itself.

I talked to my machanic and he told me he had called Mitchelin in Greeneville S.C. and the tech. told him that the MAP should be reversed when put on the front because of the tread pattern. If put on forward the treads would be backward and not shed water properly. The front tire does not pull like the back wheel does so the tread design is important I am on my second MAP after getting 15,000 on my first one, have 13,000 on this one and it looks as if it could go another 3,000. I am not the authority on this, just repeating what I was told and my experiance.

All I can tell you is this . Don't ask a tire salesman they don't know about trikes . I have a Macadam 50 you can't even buy them any more . It is a rear tire configuration . I have had it on the frt of the trike 5 years & for 24,000 trouble free miles, I have it at 40 # . I have driven it hard through twisty turns . I have held sustained speed of 80 miles an hour, I have driven 100 miles in the pouring rain ( cars were pulling off the road ) so what are you trying to get out of your front tire my doubting Thomas friend. VERY Dangerous to run a radial tire on the front of a trike . also I don't like paying my tire salesman $150.00 ever 7,000 miles. I don't like the hopping feeling in turns.

Question Re: Rear tire coming apart mounted in front. (Read 1st post)

Last summer when I traded trikes my trade in had almost new Michelin pilot rear tire mounted backwards on the front. He made the comment that he would have to replace the front tire. I ask him why and he told me that the Michelin rep told him that when their tire is mounted reversed like that there is no longer any warranty on the tire and they are not responsible for any thing when it blows.

Well guys you have me confused , I have Bridgestone radials on my Victory cross country and going to trike it with CSC Ventura, someone said a radial tire on the front is dangerous on a trike?
Are you saying. Ave to find a bias ply rear tire in the same size and run it on the front and throw away the current front tire when I trike it? Dealer ever said anything about this

can't speak to them being dangerous but the original front tire on my vtx was a dunlop and it lasted just 4000 miles--i replaced it with the michlon pilot mounted backwords and just replaced with another piolit a couple weeks ago with 23000 miles on original.
Remember--It is never the issue but rather how we react to the issue is the issue.

The radial isnt dangerous,it just wears out more quickly than a bias-ply tire. Just wear it out and then switch to a bias-ply of your choice. Between the MPA,ME880 ,lasertech,BT45,Pirelli and such ,Im sure youll find one that will suit your needs.

FWIW, I mounted a brand new rear Dunlop 402 (MT-90x16) on the front of my Harley Softtail about a year ago. I mounted it in the normal direction, not reversed, because it looked like it would shed water better. (Channel water away rather than into the center.) It was left over after I "triked" my Electraglide. Since I was unhappy with typical front tire life, I decided to try a rear since I had it and nothing it would fit. (I use 150/80 rear tires on the Softtail.) Handling and braking are at least as good as with a front tire. Ride is the same. Tire life is much better, barely visible wear at 8,000 miles. Plus tread depth on rears is deeper than fronts. Haven't ridden in significant rain, so don't know about wet handling. I ride pretty briskly in the local twisties (yes, on a Softtail). I'm planning on mounting the same on the trike when it needs one.

Just FYI. If we are talking about a Gold Wing.....
    The tire size is:
    Brigestone BT-45 - 130/70 R 18
MPA (Michelin Pilot Active) 400H 18

Both are "Bias Ply. There is a difference in the Speed Rating.
Whether you think you can or you can't, you're probably right. (Henry Ford)

Bob I was wondeing who told you for the MPA 400H 18?
I would be very careful on going more than the 130/70 with the Wings plastic fenders.

I bought a MPA online and mounted it on the front in reverse 5000 miles ago and it still looks new and handles way better than the Dunlap or Metzler. This is mounted on a VTX1800.

    Hi;

I've had a Avon Venom rear reverse mounted backwards on the front.

I mounted mine in reverse because the tread pattern was directional & it was mounted to push water to sides when braking.

It has been on for 15000 miles with good tread left. The only problem is the Avon sidewall cosmetic cracking. My bike is a Royal Star Venture with a Voyager add-on. 1/2 mileage as 2 wheels - other half with Voyager.

I have the 130/18 rear Mitchlin Active on the front expected life is around 40 K but the handling is awsome. Our builder Honda of Sumter puts them on the front of all CSC and Champion units they build . my 2012 Champion on a 2010 GL 1800 is fantastic !

I put the Dunlop rear tire from a 2008 Utra (I think 404) on the front of my Tridglide in the reverse rotation. The dealer that installed it for me had no problem with installing it. Then at 20,000 miles on this tire I hit a deer and it puncher the tire and I had to replace it. At 20,000 the tire looked great and looked as if it would run another 20,000 miles. The original tire that came on the trike was worn out at 20,000 miles.

The dealer I took my trike to for repairs after hitting Bambi's mother would replace the front tire with another rear tire however he would NOT reverse it. After a long discussion with him and showing him the articles I found on this forum about reverse rotation he finally agree to put it on reversed.

Just had to replace rear tires at 45,000 miles. Also Dunlop Signature. The Harley Stealer told me I had to get these rear tires from him that they were different than a car tire and would not work. I went to a Goodyear dealer and got another set of Dunlop Signature rear tires (same exact tire). Needless to say Harley wanted $440.00 for two and Goodyear got $220.00 for two balanced and mounted.
