    Default Motor Trike conversation

    Folks new here, in Honda and GL delphi forums. I have a 2000 1500 GL SE with a Motor Trike conversion. It is not a Phoenix, company says it maybe a "Classic" or earlier model. They claim to have nothing on it in the way os schematics, etc. My dealer here has extremely little on it. The right side has several heimi joint rods (tie rod ends). 1 is a cursive style Y with heimi joints on all three legs. Worried that the threaded are on this strut maybe worn. Is there a way to find replacement part, or conversation schematic?

    I know Im not being much help. But as MT uses a lot if not all Ford components.
    Looking through some early 99 or so Escort or Focus diagrams might be helpful.
    Its a place maybe to start.

    I had a Valkyrie with MT kit called the Coup. Looked about the same as what was used on the 'Wing except for the top box. The rear axle was a 7" Ford, when I needed brake shoes & a seal, took the parts to O'Reilly's and they matched them up. I believe the 4cyl Mustangs & Ranger pu's were the go to models.

    The heim joints, just insure that the lock nuts are tight, lube them up well with a silicone spray lube, and grab them and see if you can twist or move them. If they rotate well, and don't have side to side slack, they're good. MT says to lube them every 5k miles, I think I remember.

    MT's new drive shaft, with the green front u-joint will fit this trike. It's a better shaft with greasable u-joints, runs with less vibration. I replaced mine, not much smoother but peace of mind on the grease.

    Somewhere on this site, someone posted a MT maintenance manual that showed these type conversions. It showed a 4-bolt wheel hub, but some were 5-bolt, the rest of the unit was about the same.

    These conversions were so simple, I can't believe your mechanic can't figure it out. I drove mine like I stole it, never any problems except changing u-joints & brakes.

    It's for the GL1800 MT Spyder, but the ladder bar suspension & heim joints look the same as on my GL1500.

    You can try taking the tie-rod end into a NAPA store. A good parts man will take quick measurement from it and can probably match it up. Most likely it is a common part off a Chevy or Ford.

    Just an FYI ... to get your realignment close, be sure to count your turns as you remove each tie rod end. Some of them might have left hand treads.
    Please keep in mind that anytime I share or give advice about a motorcycle, unless I state otherwise, I am always referring to GL1800's and no other.

    Greg has the right idea for the most part. The heim joints used are a "common" part that's typically on the shelf at the great majority of bearing supply stores as well as a lot of offroad shops (they're used with a lot of off road buggies).

    As far as turn outs - BEFORE you remove any of them, I always recommend measuring from the end of the bar to the center of the hole in the heim joint, this will get you within 1/16" or closer of where you need to be every time. I always made a quick "drawing" of the ladder bars or rod & wrote the measurement for each point to be sure I didn't mess it up when going back together.

    In reality, NO ONE will be able to tell you the turn outs that yours are set to. With older bikes, you don't know who built it, who's worked on it since, or even what they were originally set to. Measuring what's in your bike now is the best way to go about knowing where your bike is set to.

    Once you get all of them replaced & installed back in the bike, with the suspension supporting the weight of the kit (axle on jack stands, on tires on the ground, etc), lower the air pressure in the air suspension so that the rear of the bike "drops" about 1 - 1 1/2 inches to simulate ride height. At this position, the cross bars that are between the left & right ladder bar should rotate freely by hand; if they're tight or in a bind loosen them so they do rotate properly. Failure to do so will cause suspension component damage and or failure with use.

    when my heim joint on my rear pumpkin went I too the old one down to summit racing in Akron Ohio (they have an extensive online mail order), and did a match replacement for them)

    havent looked back
