    Post Rear Brake Problems

    I have a 1990 GL1500 SE. I don't know what conversion kit I have. I do know it is a Mustang rearend. I have very little rear brakes. I have bled them and it appears no air coming out.

    The fluid level is fine. The brakes have been adjusted. Still very little brake. Can anybody give me any suggestions? The front brakes work fine. If the Master Cylinder is bad, where is it located? Fairly new to all this, please help.

    Welcome to Trike Talk !!!!

    Dan the trike conversion brakes are driven from the OEM master cylinder which is located somewhere on the right side just behind the rider foot peg. I have little to no GL1500 experience but I can tell you where to go and download a 1994 GL1500 service manual. For 99% of you needs I sure it would be a very good idea to get this thing. Go to goldwinddocs.com You will have to sign in like this forum but it's a small price to pay for all the help you can get from that source.

    You mention adjusting the brakes so I'm going to assume you have drum brakes on your trike. I would check to make sure the wheel cylinders are actually working and pushing the brake shoes out like they should. If the cylinders are seized, when you bleed you'll still get fluid flow like you should but when you push the brake pedal, the pistons don't push out like they need to in order to apply the rear brakes.



    Does your foot pedal feel fairly firm, or does it have a good bit of travel with very little braking? Depending on the type of conversion they may still be linked to the front left caliper. I see this quite a bit when a 1500 sits, they will bleed the rear brakes but not realize they are tied to the front left caliper and that it needs to be bled via the foot brake pedal as well which can leave air still in the system. Once again, not all models keep them tied together, so this part is likely brand specific.

    Can you post a pic of the trike both side and rear view, so we can tell you what you have.

    You may also have the rear master cylinder operating the single front.
