Had to change a tire at the track , this bird stayed around me the entire time . I mean within 2 ft of me . I had to get the tractor to bend steel back in shape , & the bird stayed there . Now I know why .

Ran into one of those a few years back. Was site seeing with the daughter's family. Mama bird was having a fit:
We have a lot of these (Killdeers) here. They don't build nests like most birds. They just lay their eggs on the sides of gravel or kalichi roads. Maybe it's the color of the stone and gravel that attracts them to certain spots. I've had quail do the same stunt to protect their little ones.
