Post No trikes allowed in canada???

TRIKES are for the AGING, HANDICAPPED, LESS ABLE as well as TRIKE LOVERS of ALL ages!
I even have one...lol...but I can't ride it on our Canadian highways!

TRANSPORT CANADA has decided in their infinite wisdom to disallow TRIKES of any kind in their assembled state as an Import to Canada, regardless if it meets height and safety requirements!
They will allow all other makes of Motorcycles, Cars, Trucks, Semi-Trucks, Boats and any and all other vehicles you can name but not assembled Trikes!
HAVE YOU EVER HEARD ANYTHING MORE ABSURD??
I have a Thoroughbred Stallion that my husband has salvaged and fixed but I can't ride it on our Canadian highways.
I'm sure you've all seen this trike??
It is the most absolute fun in riding and traveling that you can find on 2, 3 or 4 wheels. It not only has a steering wheel, it also has a Ford Fusion Engine and Automatic Transmission, air ride, adjustable brake and throttle control, tilt steering column, cruise control, heat and air-conditioning, 7cu ft of cargo trunk space etc. etc. etc. I could go on forever with this Trike but why not just go see the official site and check it out?
No Canadians are allowed to have one of these incredible machines and unless someone buys the franchise, sets up an assembly plant, imports the parts and assembles them here in Canada ...we are "s@#t" out of luck!
And that's not going to happen because they are too busy trying to fill the orders they have in the USA
I have mine because it was in an accident in British Columbia, needed repairs and was subsequently left here in Canada.
Thanks to my incredibly talented husband, I now have a fully functional Trike that needs a little fiberglass repair.
Not that it matters at this point because I will probably have to sell it back to the U.S.A on eBay or something.
The thought of that just breaks my heart!!!
If you had one in your driveway like i do, you would understand my angst.

Anyway, thanks for listening to the ranting of this Aging, Disabled Lady Rider and please take the time to oin my Group on FaceBook CALLING ALL CANADIAN/AMERICAN MOTORCYCLISTS...WE NEED YOUR HELP!!!
and post/share it on your FaceBook if you believe that this is AN INCREDIBLY STUPID LAW and that it should be changed and changed very soon....V (",

I just looked at motorcycle laws in Ontario and found they do recognize trikes. I'm unclear where you got your information. Possibly travelling into the country?

It is not allowed because modified vehicles cannot be imported into canada. Yes trikes are allowed in canada. I have one. You can bring a US goldwing into Canada then go to your friendly trike dealer and he will install a kit on it at double the price you would pay for the same kit in the US. At present there are only two trike kits which carry the federal DOT aproval sticker in Canada. They are Lehman and Motor Trike. No the Stallion is not approved as of yet. Motor trike told me last year at Daytona during bike week they are working on getting their aproval.
These two above mention trike kits are the only kits that the Motorcycle Insurance industry in Ontario will insure. Other trike kits are being insured in other provinces because they have provincial government run insurance program. Under this program they have to insure all vehecles in the province. Those provinces are British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Quebec. The rest of the provinces hold their citizens as hostages to what they will insure. Very hard to find and insure Volkswagen trikes in Ontario. Some car insurance companies will but at a high cost and you must move all your insurance needs to them and only them to get insurance. Talk about being held hostage by them. I always tahough being held hostage was a crime in this country. I guess my brother is right, large corporations have more power than both the Federal and Provincial government have and rule the country.

Another weid thing is you can buy the bike in the US and import it into Canada in the trailer and at the same time you import the trike kit in a box in the back of the pickup and it is legal. once all the paper work is done and you are cleared you can then proceed to install the imported trike kit onto the imported bike and you are legal to ride. What is wrong with this scenerio?????????????????????/ Roger

being from oregon the only thing I know about canadian liscenceing is the rules say a trike needs 25% of its weight on the front wheel.
check with ben at trike central in chillawack bc and maybe he can give you pointers as he is the canadian importer for rewaco trikes.

I don't know where everybody gets their information from, but my kit was assembled in Oregon onto my bike...I brought it into Canada,...no problem. Lehman started their company in Canada. Harley sells trikes here. You see Can-Ams all over ther place as well as goldwing and other conversions, rewacos, and even the T-rex I believe is allowed now. What isn't allowed as far as I understand an assortment of homebuilts, (e.i. the volkswagon conversions) or full trike builts, (such as the Stallion), that haven't submitted their vehicles for an engineering assessment in order to be certified as "safe" by Transport Canada. This is done to protect the public...who knows if that back yard mechanic knows anything about making a trike out of a volkswagon chasis, or if that foreign trike manufacturer isn't just a rip off artist. Not saying they are folks, just saying they need to be checked out first. If you can't get insurance or registration for your trike, don't blame the government, blame the company who can't be bothered to get certification in this country.
As far as importing into this country goes,... my insurance agent tells me that a bike conversion like mine or the goldwing, etc. conversions are viewed as a motorcycle accessory and therefore not a problem with registration... only the "built as a trike" vehicles have a problem and need to be checked out as a safety risk, before they can be registered. Insurance is usually a deal with the insurance companies, not the government. Government only says a motor vehicle must be insured. I hope this clears up a few misconceptions, and my intention is not to call down anyone or any company. My hope is that more people her will try to import trikes into Canada as I understand that aside from paying some taxes and doing some paper work with the border. And yes, right now you have to be choosy about bringing back a non-conversion trike but eventually, if the manufacturer does their work, these machines may even be allowed to come into the country without problem. Good news, Chumbly, because ScalpHunter and I are planning a "big trip" next year up to Yellowstone & Glacier NPs, on up to Banff, across Canada to Montreal then down thru Niagara Falls, Pittsburgh, and on to TTIV in Maggie Valley. Glad we won't have to change our plans because of misunderstood Canadian rules. Thanks!

Nancy, even if the trike was illegal to import to Canada, there would be no problem with driving it in temporarily as a tourist..... as long as it didn't stay there!!!

Chumbly. Go to Registrar of Imported Vehicles and read what you can import and what you cannot import in trikes from the USA into Canada. The only trike at this moment you can legally import into Canada is the Victory trike. Why you ask????????????/ It was built at Victory's factory as a factory built trike an meets the 25% weight requirement on the front wheel. It is a Lehman kit but because it is installed by Victory it become OEM. Also as of now, you cannot import a Harley trike which is built by Harley because it does not meet the DOT front wheel weight limit of 25%.ld then have to sell it to a US buyer.

If you are thinking about buying one in the US, please, please contact www. riv.ca to look up their phone number and call them to make sure you get the right advice if you can import a US trike or not. I only want you to believe in one thing that I wrote on this post and that is to call the Registered Import Vehicle Department located in Mississauga Ontario Canada or any branch offices near where you live. Thank you Roger [GYMPY]

That sux. Worse than New Joisey. I used to have to do all kinda silly crap to my 1st VW build to get through inspection, then come home and undo it all. An all day affair once a year. How I miss that - NOT.

So, just to be clear. I would have no problem passing through Canada on my Tri-Glide next summer when I am planning a NY to Fairbanks trip.

Passing through should not be a problem, Leaving the trike there would be illegal. Same as if you drive into the country with a car that is not imported there. Just make sure you have your registration, etc., with you.

Thanks. I always carry all paperwork. I'm used to police and border harrassment. Unless my wife is with me, then they don't seem to bother me.

    Section 8.0 - MOTORCYCLES
Looks to me like Tri-glides, (at least 2009-later), are allowed... also I have seen them for sale in the local Harley shop, and I know they're not made here, so... Remember what we're talking about here is factory built/ for factory built trikes here, not conversions. Lehman only builds one trike for a company (Polaris) that I know of... but they build conversions for many different Brands. I've seen them...they are ridden here... and we don't hate Americans.
As far as simply riding one across the border, Nana is right in that anything that is registered and insured in your own state and is not meant for resale here would likely not have a problem just riding across... and, as far as being harrassed by border guards, believe me, it happens both ways and to me as well, sometimes. One thing you gotta know though is that if you have ever been found guilty of impaired driving, or have a criminal record, you will not be let across.... sorry, nothing personal. Chumbly-

Personally I think the United States could be more strick on things and persons they let into our country. We could take some good lessons from a few other countries and our neighbor Canada! IMHO:yes:
