Wink Looking for a little guidance and opinions

New to Trike Talk and looking for some guidance and opinions. Rode a 2 wheeler yrs ago and loved it. Life of a mom got in the way and a divorce so "I" just had to wait.

Time has finally arrived so I am now looking at getting myself either a Spyder or a Trike so I can once again ride and enjoy that freedom.

    Opinions please and thanks

Welcome to Trike-Talk Peg... First go test ride as many 3 wheel Trikes as you can.. Thats the best way to tell which machine is the right fit for you....Then you can pick peoples brains on a particular one...

    Again, Welcome...

MY suggestion would be to test ride the different trikes out there and make your choice.

I went from a Triglide to a Spyder and am really happy so far with my choice

    Things to think about

    1: Upper body strength

2:Have you ridden a trike before

3:If you are looking for more comfort than status symbyl

4: Some bike are hotter than others

Just a few things so far

I am sure more will chime in..

Welcome to the Gang from Western Colorado.

+1 on test riding as many as possible. The go with what speaks to your heart.

No Offense ... so don't flame Me ...

Trikes require push and pull steering which does require more upper body usage. When I had a Tri Glide, I used to get sore if I did a coupe hours of twisties. I now have a Honda Gold Wing Trike with a 6* rake kit. Huge difference, hence, I'd recommend a trike with a rake kit.

The Spider is a nice ride, but it is a different experience. From what I've been told, it takes about 200 miles to be comfortable if your coming from a bike. I test drove one and liked it, but, I could see where a little learning curve was needed. Of course any trike has a learning curve if you are coming from a two wheeler.

With all the variables, you can see why we recommend lots of test drives. Once you purchase. I recommend lots of parking lot practice until you are comfortable with it. When I bought my first trike (the Tri) I had 46 years of two wheelers. I am not kidding, I literally felt out of control for about 75-100 miles. Kind of embarrassing until I got input from this site and the other one. Seems a large percentage of the riders had the same experience as I did.

Hope this helps a tad, and again Welcome.

    to TT Peg!

As others have said, test ride as many different kinds of trikes that you can. They all have their Pro's and Con's.

    Default Welcome Peg

I've had both a Spyder RT and a Triglide. I really liked my Spyder. I found it super easy to ride. It was smooth and very comfortable. I was learning to ride a trike when I got it and it was the perfect vehicle to learn on.

I have a Triglide now. It is more challenging to ride (shifting gears, no power steering etc.) but I like it better. I like having that one wheel in front. Also, it's a Harley so it can be fitted to you specifically.

Definitely test ride any trike you are interested in. They all ride differently. Good luck with your hunt.

You have been given the most important info, test ride both styles and see what is most comfortable and stylish to YOU!

Having said that, I will give you MY experience and strictly MY opinion....I have gone from a conventional trike (1900cc V-Twin, still in my garage for sale) to a Spyder F3 Limited in the last month. My ride experience is that my conventional trike (with a front fork rake kit installed) was a more luxury ride than my new F3 Spyder. For me it was like going from a Cadillac CTS to a Corvette, both fast but one works you more. The F3 works me more with it being more of a performance handling bike than my conventional trike. I work more in the twisties because it reacts quicker with the steering of the two wheels in front. All that being said, I do like the F3 and will be getting more used to it as I get more miles on the clock and down the road. If I had my wish........I would keep BOTH trikes! But my wife says, NO WAY, I want my car back in the garage (she has a trike as well the the garage is full)!

Good luck and we will expect you to keep us informed with your test ride progress, and of course with pictures upon your decision!!!

I have had both a Goldwing Trike and now a Spyder RT. The Spyder put the fun back into riding after leaving 2 wheels for 50+ years. The GW was never fun for me,the Spyder is a blast. I have put over 20,000 miles on mine in a little over 2 years. It will take you a little while to get used to,it doesn't lean. If you have ever ridden a 4wheeler it is a lot like that. Good sales going on right now on left over new and low milage used are always an option. Go for the Spyder.

I just got a 2012 Spyder RT SE5, I went out and put a couple hundred miles on it right after I got it and I must say it handles very well, has more than enough cargo space with the front compartment, the rear trunk, and the side compartments, to go on a nice trip for several days or even go to the grocery store. The only negative I've found so far is that I was caught in a light rain shower the other day and noticed that if you do not take off from a stop at a slower pace the stock rear tire with try to fish tail. I've been told that changing this out for an actual car tire helps with that issue. Other than that the Spyder has been great. My Girlfriend even road on the back of the RT and she loved it. I could never get her to ride on the back of my two wheeler so if she's happy with it and will ride with me then that's all the better.

If you do go with the Spyder, for 50 dollars Can Am offers a Spyder Riding Course on their webs site. it's a certified course that can get you your M class if you don't have one and can get you insurance discounts. Just something else to think about. If you go with a conventional trike you might check with the Motorcycle Safety Foundation and see if they have any courses for trikes. I know their regular Motorcycle course runs about 200 dollars and it is about 2 and a half days of training. If you haven't ridden in a few years it would be worth looking into.

Not sure what tire pressure your running at but maybe a bit lower PSI may help with the traction some.

How many miles are on that rear tire? Because of their construction they tend to wear in the middle as if they had too much air in them but they are just designed poorly.

    Hello,

For what it's worth, I switched to 2015 spyder limited from a Stallion. Overall, I found the spyder to be a more comfortable with a passenger. Rainy weather, the spyder excels. If you are looking for attention from women, buy a used stallion. The adjustable windshield and back shocks is really nice on spyder. Don't use the radio on anything. Heated grips were nice. Found the handling and cornering to be better than Honda / Harley bikes I've ridden. You need to test ride as many as you can .Found the turning/steering of spyder less painful to shoulder than any two wheel or three wheel bikes I've had the pleasure to own ,ride . Have not ridden the BMWs. Good luck

    Pete
