should you change both rear axles if one breaks

hello:

my GL1800 trike broke a left rear axle last year with 40,000 miles.

last month the right axle broke. I'm asking your opinion as to whether

it should have been suggested or offered to me to replace the right axle

when the left was replaced, since the rear end was already taken apart, and

the part is relatively inexpensive. now I have to pay labor again.

opinions please.

Not enough information to even offer a good evaluation. Not knowing exactly what caused the first failure makes it impossible to say the second one was prone to failure. If the failure was under warranty then the company was only liable for the failed item. If not under warranty then you and your servicer should have had this discussion while he was replacing the first broken axle.

As stated, I feel the service person should of at least broached the subject of replacing both. The more information you have, the more informed decision you can make.

Also as stated, if it was under warrantee, all bets are off, they would of only did what was needed.

If they are CV axles I say YES from years of wrenching

Remember to let the bike down on the ground before u pull the axle all the way thru the bearing {if this applies}

If u do not it will lead to premature failure and bearing wear { Not Just My Opinion}

Mark, Did your Honda break its axle or did the axle of the trike kit manufacturer break? Doesn't seem fair to blame Honda for this one. I'd be inclined to lay the blame right at the door step of whoever built the kit. This is the first axle breakage I've ever heard of, but I've only been riding a Triglide for 5 years so I may be too new to this game to make a good call on that. But if anybody's is gonna break it'll probably be mine cuz I'm known to hot rod it a bit. Are you a hot rodder or do you carry a lot of weight? Do you have Independent rear suspension?
