Default Reenies Trike finally finished!

With all the trips we took this summer, this trike build for my wife, Reenie, took much longer than I would have liked, but with the paint dry and the pinstriping done yesterday, it's finally finished. Complete build pictures are in an album called "Reenies bike to trike"

Dave, of course it should look good, look how long it took! Is it true that you slow down as you get older? My question is: If it hadn't been on the "honey do list" but on "crap I would like to screw around with" list, how long would it have taken? Seriously, fine job, couldn't have done a better job myself, only quicker.
Hi,
What kit is that and did you leave the motor stock? Looks awesome.
    Thanks,

Thanks to all. Yes, this took quite a while, mainly because we traveled in the toy hauler with my trike, two to three weeks a month from May to August. Having the body and fenders tied up in the body shop for 8 weeks didn't help either, and keeping the two manufacturing plants we own running took some time as well. Actual working time was probably something like three to four weeks. As to what it is: This started life as a 2005 FLSTN that I bought new in August of 2004. I rode it a couple years, and my wife took it over in '07. I went thru the motor early in it's life, making it a 95", ported heads, Andrews cams, etc. In those days I was into Power Commanders in a big way, and did a lot of tuning and wrote a few articles on those things for J&P. Pretty much ancient history now, but this bike still runs pretty strong. After sitting a year or so, as my wife had back surgery, along with surgery in both wrists and elbows, we decided to trike it this year. For the trike part, this is not a kit, but rather a collection of chosen and fabricated parts.

I became a dealer for DNA, and the rear is one of theirs. She wanted a body with a trunk, so after talking with Lenny at US trikes, I got one of his 'Reaper' universal bodies. The glass is thick, and very well built, but the mold seams do require some work to straighten. The 12" fenders bolt on, which I liked for ease of replacement should any accidents happen in the future. The swingarm I fabricated out of box tubing, taking liberties with the Lehman 'no-lean' design. The body mount I fabricated with square tubing, and it's bolted to the softail struts, with the body sitting straight down on rubber mounts on the body frame. We tucked the 265/50 tires up in the fenders, so the body must be removed to change a tire. It takes about 10 minutes to lift off the body, and all of the rear lights and harness stay with the body. I installed a Road King cruise control, and the cruise module and ECU are mounted to a fabbed bracket mounted to the body mount frame. So the body lifts off by removing the seat, removing one screw at the top of the ECU tray, (which only has the PC-3 in it) disconnect one connector for the rear harness, remove 8 screws from the top of the body, and lift it off.

I like that it can be removed so easily, giving you fast and easy access to the whole rear end, swingarm, etc. The exhaust is Samson true duals, with short fishtails, which hang from some more fabricated brackets, allowing for the short 'S' pipes to drop below the rear end. She wanted a fairing and some tunes, so that is a Kuryakin stereo fairing. It takes any FLH 3 bolt windshield too. I'm a dealer for CCC products, so I used a 4 degree raked tree and 2" longer forks. After the first couple hundred miles, we decided to install a steering damper, which I mounted sideways under the trees a-la Tri Glide. I'm an AIM dealer too, so, of course I added reverse and a VP clutch. For more off the line performance, I went to a 1.53 primary ratio, and kept the stock secondary ratio. The tires are 256/50, and the speedo error is less than 1 MPH at 60. I have built 'kit' trikes, my Motor Trike Trog, for example, and having everything in one box, makes for a pretty fast conversion.

This one presented many more problems requiring solutions, just like anything home built, but not beyond the scope of any decent wrench bender. As I approach retirement and turn the manufacturing business' over to the kids, my plan is to start building trikes for sale. The work is more fun than I've had in many years, rewarding, and I just love seeing the smiles created. Since this one has hit the road, I've got two more lined up for this winter. How long will they take? Well, we're only going on one 2 week vacation to Arizona in December......
Once again, thanks for the positive comments.
I'm a very happy camper today! Trike turned out beautifully! Ultraboy outdid himself and managed to fabricate, mold and whatever it took to get it just like I wanted it! Also, a special thanks to our friend Don for the pinstriping! All in all it rides like a dream, and is even better than I hoped. Thanks to my talented hubby (and a couple of his "buds") for giving me just what I wanted!! Knew I kept him around for a good reason!!! LOL

Very nice work Dave. Reenie is a lucky gal.

What is the design on the breather cover? My old laptop can't seem to bring it in very clear.

You won't see too many trikes that look that good on the show room floor:yes:
