    Default OIL Slobering sob

2009 twin cam triglide. Completely stock that I know of, bought used and it is slobering oil all over the right side. When I take the football AC cover off and filter off I see no hoses what's so ever. How do they vent these engines?

Service manager at HD said they vent it through the tranny, I thought to myself if he would like to buy a bridge. I have talked to the very helpful and ladies nice too may I add at DK and will be ordering the kit they suggested. I have re-routed many a CVR but for some reason this twin cam has me baffled.

I quit riding Harley's in1970 because I got tired of having to be followed by a kotex truck, followed by a snap-on truck and an oil truck bring up the rear. Is this common or "normal" for theses engines? Thanks in advance

What your experiencing is commonly called Blow-by....Gonna bet theres too much oil in the crankcase...There is two vent holes and it vents back into the throttle bodies to be burnt up in the engine.... But if overfilled it will drip out and down the right side...

And sometimes overfilled is putting in the recommend amount.. If you run a 1/2 Qt less than what is recommend the blow-by will stop...

of course, you could also go to DK Customs (one of our sponsors) and pick up one of his Discrete Breather kits. Of course, if it is over-filled, you may still have a little to deal with, just from the remote instead of the air cleaner...

Can u post a picture, There must be some kind of venting going on, What does your backing plate look like, U may have a Sceaming Eage or a Arlen ess Big Sucker, they vent thru the intake U will not see any hoses, the vents come off the banjo bolts on the heads and dump into the throat of the induction module, if your oil is more than 1 half up your stick u may be puking oil when u ride hard

Jack the breather is the stock foot ball shaped cover. It did'nt start this untill I had HD put a heli coil in the front jug where their famous grade 5 bolts that hold the upper mount just love to break off.

At which time they took it upon their selves to change oil and then all this started. I used to own a Mercury Marine dealership and have put in a truck load of heli coils, knew I should have done the job myself, just got old and can't get up and down like I once could.

But between you guys here and at DK plus some other friends who run twin cams I have concluded it's got too much oil in the thing. Now to call HD and tell them to stop what they're doing. Oh I did replace the grade 5 bolts with grade 8 and applied red locktite to them

Good deal, my 107 likes at least a half quart less oil than the manual calls out for

My 2 previous TC engines were the same way

Thats what i did on my 11Tri..Grade 8 full thread and 268 stick locktite...I also was pretty good at using Heli-Coils...But when the bolt snapped on mine, I just spun it out caveman style, Hammer and chisel tapping counter clock wise...Without buggering it up with an easy-out...The reason the bolt brakes/snaps is because when it loosens the bracket will guillotine it..

Just curious as to which bolts you guys are upgrading from grade 5 to grade 8 as I have not heard about this problem with them breaking off?

The Tie link bracket thats bolts to the front head.....And there have been quite a few that have broken off. [And posted on Trike-Talk]...And all years....The M8 Engines have a slightly different setup... And on those Harley recommends to check them at 5k intervals...

I had the bolts come loose on my Trike twice. I changed the solid link to one of these links:

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/ENGINE-STABI...-/152302393342

It is a Comp cams #9600 engine stabilizer.

You can use a grade #6 bolt in place of the grade 8. It has better strength than Grade 5 without hardening of a grade 8. I also used the green bearing mount loc-tite. Permanent, but all you have to do is heat the bolt head with a torch to turn it loose.

Never has come loose since .

    Lightning,

Does ur air cleaner and filter look like this

If it does # 3 and 4 come off the heads to the air filter, blowby from TOOOOO much oil will pee outa the air filter, more than usual if UR over full, Also the TC motor should have the oil pump alignment checked JUST BECAUSE, this TOO can cause blow by

If U want I can link u 2 more info on how 2

The bolt you hear about is in the front of your front jug and there are two of them. They bolt a plate to the front jug which in turn goes up and connects to a piece that goes to the left side of the bike and bolts to a stud on the frame. All this to try and take some of the vibration out.

I just love your ease out. Patent it and get it in some shop manuals then buy a new trike!

Looks somewhat like that but learned that it is a high flow stage 1 air filter.Bolt 3 has just a plain head and there is n hose anywhere, #6 has been deleted and completley re designed they now have a ridge on the engine side which is drilled through the hole that bolt 3 (new style ) vents into sending the garbage to the throttle body.

My 2011-Stage 1 Was set up different ,#4-6-7-10...Were eliminated...My air filter was round, And i took off 12/13, [Filter Cover] and replaced it with the top of a medal candy can, Painted it black drilled a hole in the center and screwd on with #2....The air filter was completely exposed, And absolutely no blow-by... And running 1/2 Qt less than recommended...

finally got it figured out, I hope. I learned that I have a Stage 1 high flow air filter and started removing oil a little at a time now I can run down the highway at 75-80 and NO oil. I'am just guessing now as I didn't service the thing the last time but I figure it now has 3 quarts in it, will know for sure when I service it. Thanks for all the help guys

Dunno why the owners manual is so complicated

5.2 quarts is max on my Freewheeler

That does NOT mean to put that much in after changing oil

You would think the manual would call out for an exact amount after draining the bikes?

FWIW a buddy serviced his Evo before heading down I95 from Richmond to Daytona. He forgot to replace the oil. He made it all the way to Georgia before it began smoking! Then he poured in several quarts of gas station oil and rode to Daytona then home. I dunno if the 2-cam and 8V motors are that forgiving but it gives an idea of how little oil one can get away with. I don't recommend "no oil" but a half quart down is unlikely to hurt anything.
