Default What are inexpensive easy to instal Blingy Parts to spruce up a stock single port

Could you guys recommend some bits & pieces to flesh out a little chrome & cleanliness on a very unmolested Mid to late 60s Single Port VW motor (Links & pics appreciated ) Hint (Chrome Ignition Coil Mounting bracket)

Come on guys , I'm semi retired and have time & money & tools , Death by SS any little chrome oddities that you would immediantly toss on a stock looking Older single port to give it a cared for look ( or parts that upgrade from stock )

    Coil cover wrap.

A lot of it is suspect on quality....

Lots of bling dealers out there, but remember: "Chrome don't get ya home!"

I'd build reliability into it first, then maybe go for the shiny stuff.

I was trying to get a closer shot of your avatar pic. It appears to be a chopped Hummer, but too small to get details?

What is it, if you know, Gator?

    Exactly...

That was just a quick example.

Get it stable with its mechanical needs then dress it up.

    Shop around.

    China chrome don't last long.

    Cheep but.....no prep....thin....no underlayment....rust pops through quickly.

Must keep it clean waxed and dry...

Gator, you live in VW land.

Google your local Vdub clubs and shows/swap meets. VW folks are really helpful and friendly and they usually have a bunch of stuff squirreled away to go to a "good home".

Check out https://www.thesamba.com/vw/ . Their classifieds have lots of good stuff. If you're patient (more time than money) you can find some pretty good deals.

I'm with everyone else, get it running and dependable then make it pretty.

Yes , we have a very active Shasta VW group ( Redding Area) and we have Wolfgang VW (vintage VW guru & Shop) in Redding . I dealt with Wolfgang & The Bus Boys ( VW Bus aficionados ) up here when I worked for "Flat Four" in Santa Monica in early 90s in Vintage VW business ...

No, but it sure looks good loaded on the rollback!

My Trike will never look "Good" compared to the mid 70s through current VW powered Kit & Factory Made Trikes that would put a mid 80s Bass Master Classic Factory team Boat that hit the floor of Boat Shows Nationwide to shame . Some of the Rigs you guys have remind me of Funny Cars of early 80s ( Skeeter Bass Boat of late 70s type Gel Coat taken to extreme and with sparkles that would choke a fire hose ) and HP well over 100 ... Front ends that put the Front wheel in next Subdivision , 250 hours of labor (with 50 hours of just sittin there lookin at it contemplating next moves , and the money ? say for 3 years of payments on a New Diesel Rig (or more) ... So I could drop $500.00 into a Chrome Engine dressup kit of the highest order and my rig would still look like something I would not trust to ride from my Country Home to My Mountain Home ...

Tryin to make mine look good this time around.

Was just a flat black hot rod.

Now have a few shiny parts and thinking of painting it blue.

But then again....I have started liking the left over red from the dirt bike tank I cut up.

Found a "Running " 1967 VW 1500 motor (300.00$) a few hours south of me and am going crazy over it , I feel this hobby is going to be far worse than Retro Black Rifle Disease (Early AR15/M16A1 Retro Rifle Building & collecting )

Find a later 1600 dual port.

    You already have a 1500.

But that is like comparing an M16A2 build to an XM16E1 build , I would not be a Retro purist if I passed on a Stock Single Port for a Fast Track Money Pit Dual Port 1600 ? (Or is Rookie Gator looking at it wrong and Building a correct Single Port Mid 60s Engine is as expensive as a breathed on modded 1600 Dual Port Engine in long haul ???

    Well....

Pure stock single port 1500 vs pure stock 1600 dual port. Not a huge difference under 3000 rpm or so. The dual port can continue to make power on up to 4500ish. Pure stock rebuilds about the same money.

The big difference is in what hot rod aftermarket power making parts that could be added if you do not want pure stock.

Sorta the difference in in a 308 Armalite 1 vs an ar15 in 308. Even though the 1 was fine in its own right and is the same caliber, the 15 has a gazillion bazillion aftermarket mods for it and can be modified in so many ways and needs.

As the owner builder of a 1997 ArmaLite AR10A2 (20" Rifle configuration with Green A2 Furniture ) I can honestly say that comparing it to any other AR .308 Platform Rifle (Unless its an Early 60s Netherlands built Portugal Contract or Sudanese Contract AR10 or late 50s ArmaLite AR10 ) is like comparing a Hemi Cuda to an AMX .

I don't know squat about guns. Just another fancy machine to me and I am into machines.

Just making a reference to what else is available for mods.

Did have a 440 cuda though.....
