Avon front tire

I actually put over 4500 (mainly Interstate/ US Hwy) miles on the Avon Cobra Chrome Trike Tire last summer, before removing and returning it last fall. So my OEM Dunlop only has around 9700 miles. But I certainly do miss the sure footed confidence and comfort I had with Cobra Chrome Trike Tire.:(

My tires look fine but are the originals. So ... they could be up to 6 years old ... I really want to change them, but, nobody is doing that around here right now.

Just realized I never did a followup in this thread like I said I would almost 2 years ago.

I put somewhere around 20K miles on the Avon front tire and still had a LOT of tread left. Normally at 20K miles I would be down to the wear bars.

Nothing about my initial review has changed....EXCEPT, either the light feeling went away, or I just became used to it.

It is a great tire, and I will be using it again, on the '19.

I have used up over half the tread on the OEM, so will be needing it soon...but, like Fuzzy, will be waiting til after this C-19 passes.

Here's an older photo, comparing the Avon with the OEM

Yea, as a general rule most Motorcycle Tire Manufacturers state a lifespan of 5 years at most for their tires. It's said a MC tires lifespan can be extended 6-7 years, with good maintenance and regular checks at a professional motorcycle shop.

For automotive tires, NHTSA says; "some vehicle and tire manufacturers recommend replacing tires that are 6-10 years old, regardless of treadwear." Suppose this applies to our trikes rear tires.

The Motorcycle Tire Installer I use told me his Liability Insurance will not allow him to install/remount a MC Tire that's 5 years beyond the Tires Date Code.

My OEM Dunlop looks pretty good, but will have its 5th birthday this year.

Avon 91 tire

I had an Avon AV91 Cobra Chrome Trike Tire on my 2016 Tri Glide and loved its overall road handling and cornering capabilities in dry and wet conditions. Had mine balanced using Dyna Beads. Unfortunately, mine did cause the annoying buzzing through handlebars, but only @ 55-60 mph. Returned to the seller for full credit last fall and remounted the OEM Dunlop.

Was planning to buy another through Cycle Gear this spring, but since it looks like COVID-19 will affect my long haul touring plans, that purchase is now on hold. When travel restrictions are lifted, then I'll certainly buy another Avon AV91 Cobra Chrome Trike Tire!!

I just put a AV91 on my 2016 triglide today. It has a nicer ride than the dunlop. It feels smoother with the light front feeling That DK described but tracks and turns With a light overall but solid feeling! Haven't tried breaking the rear tires loose trick; but the tire just feels good on the road!

Now I have a slight vibration around 50 to 60mph like Shapeshifter describes as a buzzing: Exactlyhow it feels. 65 to 75mph no buzzing Vibration or 0 to 50 none! Thought maybe the balance weights

fell off nope! I have only put 28 miles on it so far and thought the big and very deep tread valleys were causing it and may go away with some wear in? Tire pressure @ 40 PSI. Friday morning run should put 150 to 200 miles on it? Fast and Furious! Will see how it does? 98.5 degrees right now.

Not sure but I believe Avon calls for 41-42 pressure. Running 42 in mine & no buzz. Little over 6k on it. Had a buzz /vibration with the ride-on in it. Had dealer move the tire over to my 2020 w/o ride on. none now

Sorry to hear your Cobra Chrome Trike Tire is giving you the same buzzing vibration that mine gave at similar speeds. I test rode solo at pressures of 38, 39 and 40, but it still annoyed me when riding any considerable distance @ 55-60 mph. The tire handled great at other speeds and in all road and weather conditions. Finally returned it last fall for a Warranty Credit with the Online Retailer. Will buy another, but through Cycle Gear this time, so their Brick & Mortar Store will install and handle Warranty Replacement, if issues arise again.

Wish you the best...

I also went with the Cobra trike tire. My frt wheel is the chrome 19" wheel. I had read of the buzzing on the 16" so I thought maybe it would not happen on the 19" wheel. Well it has a vibration just like others. I go in next Monday for my 1000 mile service. I'll see what they think & go from there. I know I'll be putting the Dunlop elite on when I do replace it. I have never had a problem with any of the Dunlops that I have had in the past.

I tried the Cobra trike tire until the tread was nearly done, it just did not work for me. There was some cupping, not serious, the ride was no better than my previous BT45, the wear was not what I expected, and more $.

I have been running Michelin Commander II rear tire reversed going on 11K not a bit of problem still over half of tread left.

I also did that when the frt wheel was a 16". I no longer had that option when I went to the 19". Another one of those not so well thought out choices of mine!

I now have about 16K miles on the AV71 that I posted about on this thread a couple years ago. Still looks great, may get another 10K on it. I don't know if the funny feel I had back then is still there or not, either way I am so used to it now that I don't even think about it. It does stay planted in turns and I can run 15 to 20 mph over the posted corner speeds when my inner hooligan comes out to play. Don't do much of that when 2-up, though ( the Momma poke in the ribs :xzqxz:)!

I just put an AV-91 on my trike ... Only got about 60 miles on it, but, I really like the lighter steering. I put 36# in it, but, tomorrow, I'm gonna raise it to 40#. Kevin of DK Customs posted a chart that says the pressure should be higher. You can see the discussion in the "What did you do to your Tri Glide today" thread.

Just ordered 1

Ran the previous model for 22000 miles so far, it is just barely touching 1 of the wear bars.

I am getting some cupping due to front suspension with 49500 on it, I have a Pro Action kit that will be installed with the tire next Friday if it gets here in time.

They are saying 10% more wear on the Chrome.

Should be hear next Thursday.
