    Default I've made a decision...

I think there is a strong probability that the frames on the Touring Models, including the Trikes, will change in 2019 or 2020.

With the frame change to the Softails for 2018, it does not make any sense for HD to Not carry that "common core" frame over to the Touring line.

I think 2019 is more likely than 2020. But either way, I have decided what I am going to do.

I'm going to keep my 2014 TG, waiting to see if the frame change occurs on the 2019's. If it does, I will sell the '14 and get a '19.

If there is no frame change in 2019, I will add one year to my extended warranty on the '14 and wait to see if there is a frame change in '20. If there is, that is when I'll get a '20.

If not, then I will get a leftover '19 at that time. By then the 2014 will probably have well over 100k miles on it.

In the meantime, it is myself, Mary and the '14 for upcoming trips!

I think you're right on the touring bikes but don't know about the trikes. I'm not enough of an engineer to figure out how to put a monoshock on a trike, but I'm sure there must be a way...

Damn Kevin, I wish that Harley had made some significant changes to the 2018's. I was looking forward to seeing how you were going to trick out another, updated Tri Glide. However, you have a really sweet ride in the 2014 and it has all of your company's bells and whistles on it. I guess I will have to be patient and wait a year or two to see what magic that you and Devin come up with when the MOCO does do substantive changes.

As you might remember, I have a November 2016 M8 engine in my 2017 TGU and this was a replacement motor after the first July build motor puked at 15 miles. I keep hearing that Harley changed the oil pump for 2018 and but do not get any sense of where this information is coming from other than hearsay?

Sadly, I am having to take a 3-month hiatus from riding due to the complete replacement of my left hip about 2.25 weeks ago. The rehab is going great and I am walking fine but my surgeon does not like to see his patient's riding horses or motorcycles where you have to spread your legs apart for the first three months due to the risk of dislocation of the hardware. Sadly, I only have about 3800 miles on my 2017 TGU. I had a ball putting on almost 15k miles on my 2016 103-engined TGU. Oh well, I put Stabil in the gas and have it hooked up to a battery tender so it just sits there looking at me wondering why we are not riding in the beginnings of slightly cooler weather for the fall here in North Florida. I also won't be able to ride my Can-Am F3s Spyder or my Brunton Stalker race car until the beginning of the new year. Man, will I ever be raring to go when my three-month sentence is up.

Sounds like a well thought plan Kevin. But remember they say to not buy anything the first year of a big change. Well I blew that a long time ago - 110" motor in 2007; M8 in 2017. But hey the M8 in my new 2018 Tri-Glide is the second year so I should be home free.

Hey! I'd like to "upgrade" my 2013 (especially for the electronics) but have been waiting, and waiting, and waiting (no clue what for actually). However, I have what some may think of as a stupid question but it's serious to me. What positive difference would a frame change make in the Tri-Glide? Not being a wrench of any sort I really have absolutely no clue

    Thanks!!

The CY 2018 oil pump is definitely a different part number tan CY2017 & prior. I have not seen the drawings or parts to look at specific details.

Hope your recovery is complete and that you feel better soon

My riding buddy's M8 was a early engine build and he was one of the victims of a bad oil pump. After getting it replaced his oil light came on again around 1,000 miles later. This time he was back home and his dealer found out it was a bad sending unit. Two dealers from different parts of the country have told him about the early bad pumps.

    Just 2 IF's

If new frame in '19 or '20, I get it

If no new frame by '20, I get a leftover '19

Seems doable to me. Also, there could still be a frame change on the Trikes that would keep the two rear shocks, but still use the common core frame.

Yeah, as a rule, first year is good to avoid. I too ignored that when I got the '14 and have suffered no ill consequences.

I am not sure the frame change (if it occurs) will be positive for us. The reason I think HD will do it is that it will be positive to their shareholders to use a common frame across multiple families.

The frame change in the '18 Softails produced a lighter bike, stiffer frame, and much more stable & smoother ride.

So if they were to do a frame change to the Trike, it is conceivable that they would experience the same benefits.

Monoshock, over twin shocks, is pretty much shown to produce better suspension for the last 40+ years, so it is about in keeping with HD timing to start incorporating it.

Hey! Wishing you a quick & complete recovery!

Yeah, I'm pretty happy with how the '14 is set-up. It is really comfortable, reliable, cool and strong.

My infatuation with the M8 is still there...but has been satiated somewhat by other bikes we've worked with that have the M8. We've been getting pretty good power out of them. I think with more time we may be able to get even more...but they have not shown, so far to me, to have as much potential as I first thought they would have. But if HD stays true to form, there are a lot of years left with the M8 to more fully exploit it.

One of the big benefits of the M8's is that I have not heard of any cranks twisting!
