    Default Front Tire Change

    So to be sure....most are suggesting the Avon Cobra AV71 {Mt90B-15 74H}

over the Dunlop? Not the Michelin.....Thanks

John, the Avon Trike tire part number for your trike is 90000025025 which the AV71MT90B16 74H

It is a direct replacement for the 130/90B16 on your Tri Glide.

It is what I am running on the front of our trike and I like how it rides and handles.

Here is a link to their website.

    "Mt90B-15 74H" .... You meant Mt90B-16 74H) LOL

IMO There are many options for a replacement front tire. AVON is one of them. Michelin Commander II, American Elite, Metzler, and Continental (ContiTour) are all on the table to pick from.

When it comes time to replace my Michelin Commander II (rear) .... I am going to look hard at the ContiTour (rear) in the correct front size.

I did realize I copied the incorrect size....but much thanks to both for making sure I'm not the idiot I have been many times along the way. I ordered the Avon as it was a specific "Trike" front tire and the reviews from others. Think I will go with the conventional direction this time to see how the tire lasts - Thanks guys

I bought mine at Appleton and had them install it. Have ridden The Trace/LBL, highway 232, and I-24. Happy and satisfied.

    OK - 200 miles today:

Interesting that this tire balanced with less than half the weights on the Dunlap....just an observation I found, interesting. So far it rides round and feels maybe a bit heavier in the Arms, but could be just in my head?

I made the mistake of taking a route today that is new to me and this might be unfamiliar roads. It seems this tire reacts differently to the crown in the road. Like it doesn't like the tire riding the crest? Not twitchy or pulling hard in any direction, but felt like it didn't like the tire where I wanted it. Anyone have the same feeling?

John, what air pressure are you running? I am running 40 -41 in mine as per Avon's tech page on their website and don't feel it reacting to the crest in the road.

The same @40....and just to be clear, I mounted the tire in the "correct" direction.

That is exactly how it should be mounted. Avon specifically designed their trike tire for the front of a trike. Run it a while and I am sure you will like it better than the Dunlop. I am sold on mine.

    Hey JC,

What you are commenting on is close to what I have felt on mine. I feel a little wiggle or twitchyness in the seat, my handlebars are rock steady. I get this when crusing (just loping along). Under acceleration or turning (engine under load) the feeling is gone. I think it is the the tread pattern and certain road surfaces that make it more noticeable. My first tire had about 1100 miles when dealer swapped it out for the second one. This one is better than the first, but still there with 1000 miles. Getting used to it now.
    It is what it is.

Interesting....you actually described it better than I.....And all if this was on back roads, good roads but older. I'll let ya know if it goes away...or I get used to it and Think it went away.....jc

Although the AVON is the only tire I have ever used on my Roadsmith trike (new trike rider this season/fifty years riding motorcycles since 1966) I'm having no problems, and will not hesitate getting a new Avon front tire when needed....(Hopefully it not till end of this season)

This weekend I switched to my winter wheels. I'm a Dunlop fan so will continue to use them. I have put the rear tire on the front in reverse with the Centramatic wheel balancer. These tires are the stock units and have twice the rubber then the ones on my summer wheels, so next summer I'm going to leave them on so I can wear them down. Hate to have almost new tires get tire rot. I'll just have to live with the ugly corroded looking wheels for awhile.

I now have 6,000 miles on my Avon Trike tire. Put it on end of July. 41 on pressure. I believe new it was 13/32 depth & now is 11/32. All back road running to Tx & back .so no Interstate roads. Love the way it rides & handles. Did some aggressive riding in the Hill country with the group there,on less than smooth pavement (rough grit). I had Dyna Beads installed when mounted.

    Default 700 mile update

700 mile update on the Avon front tire:

Any issue with the tire not being comfortable on the crown is now gone. I have traveled the same roads and of course new roads and the bike is now solidly planted where I put it. Tread is holding up very well....but at 700 miles all tires would look that way. I believe there is a slightly different increase in the effort to turn the bike {at slower speeds} with the contact patch being larger. And on a very stupid level...the rubber seems to be duller - after a good wash and dressing, it still has almost a slightly gray hint to it....anyone? All in all I like the tire and only the mileage I get will be the true test.
