Modifications to my 2017 Freewheeler

When I bought the FW in CA. I had the dealer install the HD 20" clear windshield, the air wing luggage rack & Kuryakyn adjustable highway bars with HD footpegs.

I also had them install a HD 12V outlet in the trunk so I could charge devices. It's positioned with the opening up & mounted on the forward facing wall.

By the time I got back to St. Louis, 2 comfort/ergonomic issues had cropped up.

I had grown to hate the location of the rear brake pedal, so I ordered the Kuryakyn extended brake pedat, moving it forward & down a few inches & love it. I fail to see how any engineer sat on the FW & thought that the stock position of the brake pedal was a good idea.

I then changed the stock grips to Avon velvet grips in black. I like them better than the Kuryakyn ISO grips & I have been using those for 15 years.

My son got me the HD cooling fan & I had a local HD dealer installed it.

I installed the Custom Dynamics front turn signal LED lights. The running light is bright white & the blinker is amber. If you have not seen these before, you should check them out, they are very cool looking & functional. I also changed the front lens to clear.

I then installed Sylvania Zevo red LED bulbs in the rear tail lights(3157R).

Both of these bulbs have a lifetime warranty.

Finally, I changed to Lucas 20W-50 full synthetic high performance oil in all 3 holes & noticed a big improvement in shifting & the motor runs cooler.

I may change to a LED headlight bulb later, but the stock HD bulb works well for me at night.

My only other issue is the seat, which is fine for a couple hours in the saddle, but on 8-10 hour days is a little numbing.

I am also considering the K&N OEM replacement air filter. I have used them on every vehicle for over 20 years & like their performance.

Feel free to post any comments or questions & thanks for listening.

Who doesn't like personalizing their ride. I put a Ultimate seat on and it was comfortable from the get go. Does sit you a little higher than stock. Question on the Sylvannia Zevo 3157 lights in the rear. Did they work correctly without a load equalizer? How was the license plate illumination with the red bulb? Thx

The LED Sylvania bulbs work great in the rear & you can see & read the plate well.

I believe that 2013's & newer (don't quote me on the year) use the CAN Bus system & don't need a load equalizer. I put LED inserts in the front also. As I stated, the initial changing of the bulbs causes an error, but I cleared it once & it stayed gone.

Jack, could I get some more info on seats that fit the 2017 Freewheeler?

Is it only late model touring seats that fit, like 2013 & newer & what bikes besides a Roadking?

Also, did you have to do any modifications to the RK seat or was it a direct fit? Thanks.

That is interesting because I called both Mustang and La Pera to see if their late model touring seats would fit the Freewherler and they both said they would not work??? If this is true... I will be ecstatic! :D

So go to your local Dealer to waste his time.....[Time is Money] Then go somewhere else to buy it .....I had a business and people doing things like that get my hackles up!

My thought to that is, why don't the local dealers match Boardtracker's prices? Boardtracker is a brick and mortar business just like my local dealer. I give my dealer the chance to match prices, and they absolutely refuse. They won't budge a penny off of retail. They say they can't, but I just say they won't.

As far as wasting time, I bought my trike there. You'd think they'd want more business from me.

My point is you don't try on helmets clothes and seats etc. just to figure out the size then buy it somewhere else where is cheaper that's what I call wasting someones time if you like the place that so much cheaper then buy it there and if it doesn't fit return it and wast your time

A dealer has lots of wiggle room on resale. I get 25% off thru a friend that has a parts shop on any HD part / accessory. Unfortunately dealers can’t offer a discount to John Q. Public, as to the amount of Indi repair shops that purchase in volume hurt the profit margin. Any internet sale that seems cheaper, is, but the shipping/handling makes up the difference.

Business 101

My 15 and17 both have Roadking seats on

Notsure why Mustang and Lapera would not fit

I am proof that HD seats fit;)

This is why Texting/Typing, Leads to so many miss-understandings....

No voice deflection or quick corrections.......

I'M Not saying Not to buy it where you can get it for less. Or ask them if they can discount an idem..........What i'm saying is;...Don't go to a dealer try on the stuff ,Take time picking their brain, And then go somewhere else , Where they don't have a display dept. for people to try the stuff on... Knowing full well you'er only at the dealer to size the stuff , So now you know what size to order from the internet...God forbid if you ordered the wrong size and now you have to ''waste your time'' sending it back.... Because Your time is worth more that a Dealers time...

And believe me if you every had a business of your own you'll understand what i'm saying...

And at this point, I'm out of this Thread....

''Six Two Charlie ''OUT''.......

Jack, are the seats OEM seats off a RK, or are they Sundowner seats made for RK's

My dealer has a seat demo program & will let you try one for a few hours.

This dealer also gives Veterans & 1st. responders 10% off parts & labor.

That is why I chose him to be my dealer when I got back from CA with the trike. I interviewed them all & explained why I was doing it.

In my opinion, the only way to handle any retail place that does not compete with other similar local businesses is not to give them business & tell them why, i.e. the other dealer gives me better service, prices.

He is the only local dealer that gives Vets 10% off parts & service. That's a big deal to me.

I have 5 HD dealerships in a 35 mile area to choose from.

Boardtracker (who is a certified Harley dealer that sells bikes at the dealership) offers free shipping if you buy $200 or more worth of merchandise. You and me both know just how easy it is to drop off that much even at a discount Hundred Dollar store. :)
