Default I found a new trike.....

...and should have it next week.

After spending the weekend with my son down in the Texas Hill County he pulled me aside and said I was going to have to get off the two wheeled motorcycle. He went on to say that my legs are becoming so weak that I was afraid to control and ride the bike at slow speeds. I had fallen over once on the trip.

With out going into all of it I knew he was right and I've known that this day was coming for over two years. I'm 73 years old and have to walk with a cane. He told my wife and we all had a little set to about it. They had done some checking and felt I would be able to handle a trike quite well. This was bad news as I sure didn't want to have to go to a trike.

But the alternative was even more displeasing--I was going to have to give up a sport I had been into since I was thirteen years old.

That's a little over 55 years I have been enjoying motorcycling.

So I go pick up my GL 1800 trike next Wednesday. I have owned two Goldwings over the years so at least I know a little of what I'm getting into. I had to sell my '08 GW two years ago because it became too heavy for me.

When I pick it up I've got a 250 mile ride ahead of me before I'm home. Since I will be breaking in a new motor as well as a new rider all of those miles will be fairly slow and varied.

I hope it works out for me.

    Hello secondroy. Welcome to TrikeTalk!
You are blessed to have a family who loves you enough to speak up when they believe you may not be safe! And you are blessed again in finding a great trike so quickly!

We have a very informative thread I would encourage you to read through carefully: http://www.triketalk.com/forum/gener...post-here.html

And when you get your trike, be aware that it will definitely feel strange at first to steer when you are used to leaning. Take time to drive around a parking lot and around a neighborhood for a while before you start on the 250 mile trip home. Get the feel of the steering and the handling and take the trip home a bit slowly until you feel more at ease.

Can I make a prediction? In about six months (or less) you will be posting on here that you wish you had made the move to the trike long ago!!!! That's what most of our members say, so you wouldn't be alone in coming to that conclusion; you'll be only the latest in a great club!

Welcome to our family here at Trike Talk! Once you get used to the trike, you should really like it. Make sure you do a little Parking lot practice before you hit the road. Really different than two wheels. Give yourself around 500 miles to become comfortable with it. Good luck and keep us posted!

I should have mentioned that I have experience with steering with a handlebar. We lived on a ranch for awhile and used an ATV to get around. It steered just like a trike. I have also ridden trikes over the years. A little getting used to but I think I'll be OK.

Having owned two GWs I never really considered any other make of trike. Maybe in a few years but not now.

I want to thank you for your replies and I do look forward to being an active member of this forum. I've read the thread posted above and learned a lot from it. Never would have thought I would run into the pump at a gas station 'till I read that post.

Default Re: I found a new trike.....

I picked 'er up yesterday and almost immediately rode over 300 miles to get home.

This is a beautiful Wing, metallic titanium. I mentioned earlier that I really had no experience on a trike though I had ridden one for a short distance. I got into it pretty well right away. To say I really enjoyed the first 100 or so miles would not be truthful. My arms were locked tight on the bars and I was in constant fear that I was going to do something wrong. The thought crossed my mind that I had made a mistake but if I was to continue ridding I was going to have to learn to ride this bike.

Right away I was able to do something I haven't been able to do in a few years and that is to pull into a gas station without the fear of laying the bike down. What a treat. I could put this bike almost anywhere I wanted.

WOW! I began to look forward to stopping for gas if you can believe that.

After 100 miles or so I began to relax and enjoy the ride. The bike steers easily and ran right down the center of my lane with no effort on my part but to put it in cruze. I love it.

I gotta thank y'all for putting up that link on how to ride a trike. I read it over several times before I picked the bike up and I sure it saved me some problems. Like not hitting the gas pump and riding down the center of my lane. I never would have thought of those.

I still need to get over the habit of trying to put my foot down at a stop.

I promise to put some pics up of this beautiful thing later today.

I don't have any sun right now and besides I've been out shining it up--in the dark no less.

Thanks again for the help all of you gave me.

Glad to hear your on Three wheels!!!
The first time I rode my trike...I couldnt wait to get off,.....now.....I cant wait to get on!! There's a learning curve involved but once you get the "steering" down you'll make up excuses to take 'er out for a spin!!

Well I've had 'er ten days now with 850 miles on the clock. I had the oil changed Friday and have begun to put a few farkles on.

I'm getting used to her and really look forward to taking my rides now. I'm going out on a poker run this morning so I'll be showing off my new bike.
