Default What would it cost to replace your trike as it sits?

Someone recently told me how much they loved their newly converted trike and asked me what I thought the average trike owner had invested in his or her trike. This person had just converted their CVO Harley Ultra and had just over $50k in the bike and accessories and spent another $25K in converting it with all the bells and whistles and matching CVO custom paint. This is far above the norm, but its probably not as uncommon as you would think.

The price of your trike really doesn't equate to the amount of enjoyment you will get from it, this is not about that, its just a poll to gather information.

So the questions is, what would it cost to replace your trike as it sits including the trike itself, or bike + conversion + all the accessories, performance mods, paint, tax, etc, etc?

This poll does not list the voter's screen name so you can be honest just in case the wifey is looking.

Below is a page posted on my local Honda dealer, Cycle Shack North's wall I thought I'd share, made me laugh. I changed the word Bike to Trike.

I have no problems with money spent and keeping it from Wifey. It was her idea too purchase the Tri-Glide; she wrote the check. She knew going in I would be spending aftermarket money on it. History does repeat itself

When I had my Goldwing and Voyager unit, it was an inexpensive buy. The Voyager was used and came off a GL1500 Goldwing and then the Goldwing came along a month later and then I put it all together. I think I had close to $10,000.00 in Baby the Goldwing.

How much my trike cost is hard to figure out.

I built my own VW trike

If I would have done everything right the first time it would have been a lot cheaper.

    I went through 3 different carb/intake setups.

I built several different front ends

    2 different custom front fenders

    2 engine builds

    and so on

For a lot of the build I did not have any support like this forum and another I used to go to

Now that I am a member here getting help and advise beforehand is a lot easier and it is helping a lot on my new build
    Thank you
    Bob

Love is just a term of endearment and maybe too strong a word, so I changed the thread title

Question: Are the 2 "over $50,000" trikes, show trikes or did it really cost that much for a new bike and trike conversion? I can see very easily where that's what mine WILL cost. I'm just not there yet. Paying off the bike first and by that time I'll physically have to trike. And the cost for kits aren't coming down.

I am one of the 2 that listed over $50,000. The trike itself was about half the 50 grand, but I took what was originally asked - the etc, etc - is what got the cost of owning the trike up there.

Zook asked:So the question is, how much do you have invested in your trike(s), or bike + conversion + all the accessories, performance mods, paint, tax, etc, etc? This poll does not list the voter's screen name so you can be honest just in case the wifey is looking.

Because we own a the trike, at least some of the cost incurred when we built a larger garage as we added on to our house is counted, and over time we bought a Bunkhouse camper, a 16" enclosed trailer, 43' toyhauler, and the truck to pull the trailers can be directly attributed to our triking/motorcycling lifestyle. Not to mention riding gear.

A new trike owner that has never been a motorcyclist before can easily got above $50,000 with the cost of a new bike conversion (Honda is announcing the new Gold Wing tomorrow - the current 2017 stock MSRP Wings run from about $25,000 for the base model to $29,000 loaded - how much more will the new one cost, even if a fraction of the rumored upgrades are true?) plus the accessories and riding gear. And usually folks don't include things like gas, oil, tires, cleaners, wax, food, drink and sometimes even lodging, etc. while on the road.

There are plenty of guys that have over $50K in their TriGlides. A new current model TriGlide with just freight, tax and zero options, no accessories, pipes, performance mods or extended warranty is $40K. Have you ever seen a stock Harley or a stock Goldwing? Factor in the Boss Hoss and other V8 trikes, the Rewacos, customs, the average is up there.

I can guarantee you that if the TriGlide owners added up every penny they have spent on their trike, there would be a lot more in the $40K to $50K and over $50K categories. Most of us dont want to think about what we have in our toys because it really doesn't matter as much as being happy and enjoying life.

As a community, most of us are closer to the end than the beginning so peace, joy and happiness matters. Most trike and trike conversions are sold due to the wife's descision, I see it all the time.

Total agreement with that first sentence. I am one of the lucky ones when it comes to the second statement. It was her suggestion we get a trike for her to ride and keep the Harley for me. Also her suggestion to sell the original VW based trike and get our 1st Wing conversion when she wanted to tour and run those 600 mile days. when we got the toyhauler the HD and Wing wouldn't fit in the garage, so a Triumph Bonneville was added to the stable. She missed the original VW trike after 10 years so she decided to get a Road Hawk. 2 trikes and 2 motorcycles in the garage, all with her blessing. I am a fortunate man indeed.

    Default Your Trike Cost

I purchased a new 2009 Goldwing with XM/Navi in May of that year for $22K out the door including taxes and many after market accessories. I sold a 2006 Harley Streetglide that had a lot of engine upgrades done to it for $14K.

When I purchased the Wing, I always knew that I would eventually be convering it into a three wheeler. The conversion was completed a year ago for about $14K that included just about all the add on options and upgrades available for this brand of kit. The conversion was done after 97K original miles on the two wheel Wing.

    Summary:

    Bike purchase: $22K

    Conversion Kit: $14K

    Total Trike Cost: $36K

Lets all face the fact that these things make zero economic sense. I've had several folks ask how much each one our scooters has cost - the Harley Sportster, 2006 MT Goldwing, the Stallion, the Can Am, and now the Prowler. We still own two of these. To a person they point out that, in some cases, we could have purchased a nice convertible automobile for less. I just say they're missing the point entirely. Anyway, I'll just say the Prowler has been our most expensive purchase, and that came at a pretty substantial discount from the manufacturer to the dealer. Accessories have been added, some of which the dealer added at no cost as an incentive to purchase, and some we have added at our expense.

Had to think a bit about the Prowler. At first I thought Pontiac? then I remembered Motor Trike.
