Not a GL1800 but it is another Honda offering, the NC700X and a side by side comparison of a manual and a DCT version. It shows the DCT version outperforming the manual. Another thing to watch, as the manual is shifting, you see the headlight dip down. That doesn't happen at all with the DCT version, it stays steady the whole time.

Although, I've been riding Motorcycles since I was 15 yrs old, (I'm 67 yrs old now) I would probably go for the auto transmission....

I used to think that shifting 4 or 5 speed cars/trucks were the best and that I'd never change to an automatic vehicle......... Well since my wife got her new automatic car, I'll never go back to standard vehicle again....................Auto for me all the way!!

Would you want the manual or automatic transmission?

    Airbag?

I have a 2015 Harley Freewheeler. In January of this year I had to have my left leg amputated above the knee. I was thinking of getting a Pingel shifter for my Freewheeler when I am done all my rehab but now I am thinking of a 2018 Goldwing with the automatic and a trike conversion.

You might want to go with the Pingel shifter for a while.

The conversion makers most likely won't get the kits to market for a year or two. They have to get a 2018 Wing - not until Feb 2018 - then design the frame and body, integrate the Honda systems with their designs, then manufacture the components. Probably closer to 2 years before we see a kit for the new Wing.

I'm hoping I am being very pessimistic - my wife always said she wants an automatic shift Goldwing trike. She was so eager she was even going to call Minnesota to ask Doug at Roadsmith about one after she watched the release video last week.

Crap! Well I guess I will go ahead and get the Pingel shifter installed on my Freewheeler for the near future, at least I will have a trike I can ride. I am still going to be anxious to see what they come up with for the Wing. I will try to be patient

Doesn't the factory construction of the Gold Wing frame determine the mounting of the trike parts? How much different is the construction of the 2018 frame?

It is different enough that it wont be a direct bolt on, but it wont be so different that the current GL1800 trike frame and running gear will be difficult to mate to the 2018 bike. It will just be a matter of mounting points. The biggest difference will be the new body styling and the design and fitment of the front end components, but those are already being conceptualized and engineered.

Anyone else considering a 2018 Goldwing trike? I think the new DCT automatic tranny will be a big draw for some. What do you think?

The Auto tranny will put a lot of people on Bikes/Trikes that for one reason or another will not even consider a stick...Just like the Can-am Spider does.....And that isn't a bad thing....

The more people out there in the open the safer it will be for everyone out in the open....

I think i really would like a DCT trike, but I would wait untill they shake the 1st year bugs out of the tranny. and see if the thing can even ...

    a) Haul our fat butts around

    b) Haul our fat butts around WITH the missus

    c) Haul our fat butts around WITH the missus - pulling a trailer

THEN lets see if it can haul our fat butts around with the missus pulling a trailer and driving a trike differential
    Rake...

How about any of the above in mountainous terrain?

I would be interested but I wouldn't buy one until they had been out at least a couple of years....unless they offered an iron clad lifetime warranty. Everyone is always so eager to jump on the latest wiz bang technology but history shows it may not be a good idea. I would want to see how they hold up, especially with the extra weight of a trike. I would be interested in a 6 speed manual trans trike.

    Just my opinion.

There is History and there is HONDA HISTORY .....

There are still 1500 owners that are waiting for all the bugs to get worked out of the 1800's. and .....

Sometimes I think outside the box on things and maybe one of the groups of riders Honda is trying to attract to the Goldwing is women. Harley Davidson has been making bikes that work well for ladies and Honda is not getting this share of the market. Let's put the GL1800 on a diet and make it the size of a GL1200, give it an automatic transmission and make it more user friendly. Give it some high end Honda car technology. Could the new Goldwing attract the women away from HD? We shall see

Yes, my thoughts exactly...the size of the GL1200...plus might appeal to more men too...they shaved the 2018 down 100 or so pounds but would like to see it lighter still.

Yes, Honda has a great reputation. I have had a 1999 Valkyrie Tour, a 2001 and a 2006 GL1800 (I had triked). I remember the overheating issues and the faulty welded frame issues as well as other issues. I also have owned Harley Shovelheads and Twin Cams. I remember all of their issues as well as reading about the M8 issues. I have also had numerous other brands of bikes and they all had issues at one time or another although I liked them all for different reasons. I am just saying I get a kick out of all the people that jump on the latest and greatest right out of the bag. That is fine, it keeps the economy going but I would rather wait and see how everything sorts out after a year or two.

    Just saying. Just my opinion.

I have a friend that owns a post AMF 1985 FLH Shovelhead, the first year of the Evolution engine and the last year the Shovel was available on some models. He still occasionally wears a shirt that is printed:

"Hear no EVO, See No EVO, Speak no EVO, Ride no EVO."
