Who else would be interested in owning a trike built using the new 2018 Goldwing?

Would you want the manual or automatic transmission?

    Airbag?

    Thoughts?
For right now I prefer a manual transmission. As I age and get a bit more decrepit. An auto might increase my riding years. But that would take a large part of my riding experience away.

Im one of a few who wont get a newer car due to the lack of manuals being offered in most cars today.

Now as to a new trike. Not going to happen. My 2010 so far since Ive owned it and repaired the CV joints has been bullet proof. No reason to replace something just to have the "latest and newest" on the block for me.

Airbag on a motorcycle. Actually seems to me to be a redundant feature in a possible accident. At high speeds I cant see it preventing injury. At lower speeds I can see it causing some possible situations where being with the bike in a slower speed collision might not be beneficial.

Come-on Honda, add a trike line to your assembly plant and reek the benefits.

BTW....if any trike Co. that can design one for the 2018 Goldwing, and do it right, it will be Roadsmith.

We hope to save our pennies and grow up one day and own one of these Triked out. We would opt for the automatic. That way the power of the force would remain with my 4 foot 11 inch wife as long as she could reach the hand grips!

Hi Randy. Been awhile since I've been on here....been terribly busy. Hope this finds you doing well.

But, yes!!! Keep me in the loop this. IF I go with one, it will be the automatic...assuming it's capable of handling a trike and towing a m/c trailer.

Oh, I think Hannigan will do a pretty good job. When I visited the site recently that owner said they can't wait to get their hands on a new 2018 so they can tear it down and start working on designing a new kit for it.

I would REALLY like to see a Honda factory-made kit. I think they have fallen way behind in this market. Surely they would like to take away some of the Harley trike market-share...? Of course, it would be priced out-of-sight. Then I’d have to wait on a gently, pre-owned unit. By that time I’d be asking Honda to trike my wheel-chair. There’s just no winning...

One would think Honda would team up with a manufacture, send them a bunch of skeletons on a made to order thing. Still would be competive with hd.

Well, as I understand it, that is just what Harley did - teamed up with Lehman...then after a few years shucked Lehman and started building their own trike.

I would hate to see any Trike manufacturing co’s go out, howevwe it’s just a matter of time as only the strong will survive.

I have a couple of friends who own Triglides. They complain that since Harley manufactures it, what they get on the basic Tri is limited and they end up spending big bucks to install the extras that they want. My good friend bought a 2017 last year and has put nearly 48K in it just so he gets the sound, performance, and ride comfort that he wanted.

I mention this not to knock Harley, but to demonstrate the fact that I think a lot of Wing owners like the idea that with several different trike kit manufacturers, there are choices for Wing riders that aren't exercised often by HD riders. No doubt some the of companies that make kits are better than others, but each has their loyal defenders. And the price points are attractive to different buyers. I've only had 2 different brands of kits on my Wings, and each had their advantage and disadvantage. I just think Wing riders like the choice.

There are pros and cons to both options and if Honda wanted to build it a trike would not be a challenge. That said after what happened with the Harley Lehman deal I would say if any manufacturer would be willing to do it there would a stack of papers a foot thick in the contract to try and prevent a repeat. That said I don't really see an advantage to an agreement like that unless it was a last ditch effort to stay in business.

Champion bought out Lehman after Lehman closed their doors after John Lehman passed away about 4 years ago. If you go to the Champion factory, in the lobby is the first trike that Lehman built for his wife. It is built on a Honda 900 frame. It is rather crude by todays standards. The main frame is made from 3" by 1/2' flatbar with big turnbuckles across the corners to keep it square.

I was so excited when Honda announced the new, revised, 2018 Wing. Couldn't wait to see it. Yesterday, my local dealer put one on the floor. Jumped in my car and went over. What a let down!. Very disappointed. Much smaller. Narrow fairing, small windshield, storage in trunk and saddlebags much less. You couldn't pack enough in that bike for a weekend trip, much less a three week journey. No side covers on the engine. Narrow seat. Rear view mirrors much smaller. Two speed reverse that actually speeds up after a couple of seconds, which is really weird. Great front end suspension. 2 inch gap in front windshield where it raises up which only lets in air. One side pocket, which is much smaller also than before. Lots of electronic bells and whistles, but not very practical for a long trip at all.

Oh well, I'm sure its introduction will result in higher values on our Gen 1 and Gen 2 Wings. I guess that is a positive.

I've been wanting one since I saw the video with the auto transmission. Shifting gears is over-rated. I just want to be on the bike with as few worries as possible. I was thinking of upgrading my '97 GL1500 to an 1800 but now I think I'll wait a few years until the prices come down a little.

    Default Trike Pingel user.

I’ve used the Pingel shifter on my 2014 Triglide for 3 years now, without a single issue.

im an amputee as well, and the Pingel takes the work out of shifting. Another thing to remember is the weight. With only one strong leg, balance comes into play and the Trike configuration takes the worry out of balancing the bike at low speeds. The Pingel will also shift quicker than the manual method.

You can can spend your time honing your skills on those pesky hairpins up in the mountains. Watch with amazement, as you turn off on a gravel road on three wheels with your two shell buds. Or at the stop lights up and down congested main roads. No worry of balancing the bike, the wife, and the load.

after 50,000 miles it seems like the manual shift system i relied on form50 years is now old school.

Enjoy. Hope the rehab goes easier than mine.

You might want to go with the Pingel shifter for a while.

The conversion makers most likely won't get the kits to market for a year or two. They have to get a 2018 Wing - not until Feb 2018 - then design the frame and body, integrate the Honda systems with their designs, then manufacture the components. Probably closer to 2 years before we see a kit for the new Wing.

I'm hoping I am being very pessimistic - my wife always said she wants an automatic shift Goldwing trike. She was so eager she was even going to call Minnesota to ask Doug at Roadsmith about one after she watched the release video last week.

    Default Roadsmith 2018 Goldwing

I've been in steady contact with Jim at Roadsmith and I'm thinking about putting a deposit on a preorder for a 2018 Goldwing kit. They have purchased both a DCT and a manual 2018 Goldwing and are making serious progress on getting the conversions done on both. I'll be going over to take a test ride as soon as the first one is ready. If anyone is interested in a 2018 Roadsmith shoot me a PM.

Default Raked front end for 2018 GoldWing

"Just sayin" As anyone riding a trike or sidecar knows the front end should be raked (4 to 6 degrees) to alleviate wobble at slow speeds.

Will the trike conversion firms be able to rake the 2018 front end and/or with the new configuration will it prove to be necessary.

I guess the engineers and Beta testing will tell. Definitely a consideration that no-one seems to mention.

Yes they have developed a rake for the 2018s. I'm sure getting it just right will require some testing, but they will not release it until it is very well tested.
