Default Looking to buy new 2017 or 2018 Tri Glide

Ive seen in forums due to 17 being first year for M8 to stay away and buy the 18. I can save some cash on the 17 and I don't want that to be the only factor making that decision for me. Also have seen in other forums that prices are set by Harley and usually there isn't room to negotiate price with dealer. Looking for all input

I can tell you 100% that the dealer can give you a great deal if they want. I got my 2017 Freewheeler in CA. and the dealer was a good friend of my sons & they do business together & he gave me a steal of a deal.

You are buying a high ticket item in the TG & there are some great deals in my area right now. Some of the deals going on for 2017's are:

    1. We have a dealer upgrading all 107 engines to 114

    2. We have another giving you an extra 2 years of extended warranty, for a total of 4 years.

The MOCO's sales are down 7-8% and they will deal. Some dealers are also advertising no money down financing with no payments till April.

In my area, there are 5 dealers in a 40 square mile area & that helps the buyer also.

Welcome Greg....Just every dealer will do some thing to sweeten the deal... I got my 17T/G Before the 18's came out, About a grand off list, And the first two oil and filter change with No labor charge......But even if he didn't sweeten the deal i would still bought it off of him....I trust them and their mechanics...

    TG=Tri-Glide

    MOCO=motor company=Harley Davidson.

Remember in negotiating, always ask, all they can do is say no. There was a dealer in my area giving you free oil/filter changes & free tires for life on touring models.

I forgot to add a Welcome from Missouri!

I might suggest a face to face meeting, vice a e-mail, especially if they don't know you.

I live in MO, but bought my trike in CA, due to a good deal developing & upon returning to MO, needed to establish a relationship with a dealer for parts/service & warranty work.

I interviewed 3, after narrowing it down & I told them exactly why I was there. I found 1 that I really liked the service manager (Navy Vet., like myself) and we hit it off. The service & parts department gives Vets 10% off everything.

Just figure out what's important to you. Is it service, if you don't do it yourself, ask for the first 3 services for free. at most dealers that's around $1,500.

Or is it free accessories. Figure out what's best for you.

    Welcome from Indiana!!!!

When I was shopping for my 2017 TG I found that a trip to the dealers worked best.

Most of the dealers I talked with on the phone were rude and would not deal. Did not try email.

I walked into 4-5 dealers and had a different experience with each one.

One of them my wife and I went into and was in the store 30 minutes looking at bikes and not a soul said a word to us.

The dealer we went with saw us looking at a TG and the sales manager walked up introduced himself, shook my had and asked if I had any question the proceeded to answer every one I had and then some.

They did not deal on the bike but did discount all accessories and clothing and gave a $1000 gift card to boot.

Since we had not rode in 23 years this added up to quite a bit.

Every time we have been back in the Sales manager will say hi, ask if I need anything and shake my hand before I leave the store.

    Bob

Good luck on your TG search. I do think going to the dealer in person is the best approach since they know you are seriously looking to buy. Be sure to post pictures when you do purchase a trike.

Don't be afraid of the first year engine,I have a 17 and it just turned 9500 miles. Not to say its been trouble free, the engine has been perfect.Just some cheap parts from HD ,clutch safety switch. All depends how far you want to travel. There is a dealer a hour north of me that was offering $ 2500 of remaining Tri Glides ,wanted to make room for 17's.So it does pay to shop around. And do it face to face with your money ready to put down or check book in hand. And have the easy going attitude that you don't care if you buy from there or not.Good luck you will love the M8 engine.

Greg, I had a 2017 CVO Limited - not a trike of course but it did have the M8 motor (the 114" version). I had it for a year and 10k miles before trading it for my new 2018 Tri-Glide which has the M8 107" motor. I had absolutely no problem whatsoever with my 2017 in the time I had it and thankfully so far have had no problem with my 2018 in the 3k miles I've put on it.

I am on several forums and have read of some M8 problems but I do not know how widespread they are or how significant. And I am not aware of any changes to the M8 motor in the 2018 model year. There may have been some but I've not read or heard of any.

So I'd say go for whatever gets you the best deal and the color combo you like. And while H-D like auto companies has an MSRP the dealers are independent and call set their own prices. There may be some discounts to be had on 2017 models perhaps.

Good luck with whatever decision you make.

    Welcome to the forum!

There are no real changes between the 17 and 18 TG, so I would seriously look at saving some $ on a '17.

You are in a good time of year to get a good price on a trike. The closer to the end of the calendar year, the more malleable some dealerships will be.

Whenever I am buying a bike or trike I do 3 things.

    1. Shop around to determine exactly what I want (color, options, etc.)

    2. Get my financing all lined up

    3. Then I call around the country, confining my calls to Dealerships that are within a $500 one way flight ticket. I tell them exactly what I want, let them know I will be purchasing this exact Trike within the next X number of days. Financing is all done. What is their best price?

Whoever has the best price (factoring in flight costs, motel & gas costs) is going to get my money.

Every time I have done the above, I have found a Trike/Bike for thousands of $ less than the "best price" one of my local dealerships would give me.

Also, every time I have gone back to my local dealerships with the price from xyz dealership, and one of them has always matched or done better.

It only takes a few hours to call a bunch of dealerships...but has always saved me thousands of dollars.

btw, if a local dealership never did match or better a price from a distant dealership, I would have no problem flying to pick it up and ride it back.

    Happy shopping!

I would shop around and IF you get a good deal from the Stealer go for it.

I have seen some pretty good deals from private sellers too. Keep your eye out and take your time.

Have you ridden a TRI GLIDE yet?

I’m going to echo what MDO said up above, I tried to trade a 2010 in on a 2016 2 years ago for 6 months. Never did happen because they were the only show in town. Ended up in another state with multiple dealerships and saved almost 1800 dollars. Pays to shop around as others have said.

Most will deal. When I got my 16, I got less than sticker & had the extended warranty added in at Dealers cost. 7 yrs warranty now. Saved over $1000 on the warranty alone.
