Voyager kit

I live in Wisconsin and today I was at my DMV to find out if I could get my trike re-licensed. I have feet problems and the state made me take driver ed over again. I am 63 years old but I did it. But they said that I had to take the motorcycle test over as well. My trike is a 91 Gold Wing with the voyager kit. The problem with the state is that my trike has 4 wheels. One front and 3 back. The state says a motorcycle can have 2 wheels or 3wheels. 4 wheels is considered a car!!!! Now what do I do?

So any body here in Wisconsin who have the voyager kit on their bike may have the same problem if they have to re-license the trike. When you think that things can't get worse they do!!!

Our law says no more than 3 wheels in contact with the ground at one time. this could be a loop hole . If you set the Voyager pre-load back to default setting one wheel will always be off the ground . Almost impossible to ride but will meet the letter of the law.

The kit is removable. It is an accessory. Therefore, it is not permanently a 4 wheeled vehicle. So, it's a motorcycle.
If you have to-take the kit off-have someone,if you can't, ride it to the BMV-get your plates. Go home and bolt the kit back on.

The problem here is that when a cop pulls up behind you and all four wheels are on the ground, you get a ticket for wrong license plate on bike. You will need a car plate. Also wrong insurance. Needs to be insured as a car. Argue all you want, but the judge has the last word. This is the problem with the voyager kit in several states.

Sounds like a problem with the state, not the trike. Here in Kansas, I licensed mine as a motorcycle, and they don't ask how many wheels are on the ground.

If they say it is not a motorcycle but a car then you should be able to ride it with a regular operator's license. You should have a friend that would loan you his scooter to get your motorcycle license. Maybe a dealer you know well would do it.

I know this is an old thread but thought I'd add to it a bit. Here in the state of California a trike doesn't need a motorcycle endorsement and can legally be operated with a standard drivers license. But.... a Voyager kit is considered a trailer with a different hitch attachment and you'll need the MC OK on the license since it's still considered a two wheel. The trailer definition was also applied when I added the Voyager to my insurance policy thru Geico. Now.. does this mean that I'd be pulling a set of doubles when adding a regular MC trailer??? I haven't asked Geico.

In my state it If you make three tracks, you have a trike. Since the motorcycle wheels make one track, and the outrigger makes two more.....we have three tracks and therefor a trike. At least that's what the dmv and the book say. The insurance lists the outrigger kit as an accessory.

They stick it to ya around here also. I hate paying twice as much for a tandem axle trailer...they charge by the axle... then they do for the truck. Ends up being triple toll. I don't think there would be a problem with a Voyager kit. The toll booth operator wouldn't know what the 'H' he was looking at...

Let me ask the obvious question here... Can you suffer thru your feet problems long enough to take your test on 2 wheels??? If you can, problem solved...

Most of these add-on outrigger kits like the Voyager, Tow Pac (what I use) are classified as "an accessory", so there shouldn't be any issues even though there are!!! Leave it to State government to make a simple solution complicated!!!

Been pondering this for a while and have a note to add about a California Voyager Kit. If it's considered a trailer then it needs to be registered.

CA trailers need to be licensed.

My voyager trike was from out of state and I had to take it to the CHP to be inspected and signed off before the DMV would register. The CHP told me I did not need a motorcycle endorsement for the voyager trike as long as I did not ride without the outriggers.

Had DMV paperwork signed off by CHP, went back to DMV and had my MC plates on my bike within 30 minutes.
