    Default Bike coughs sometimes

    So I can be riding along, always at highway speeds and every once in a while the bike coughs. Just once maybe again later 20 minutes are so.

    Not always. and that is it.

    any idea what it is, I use 91 grade gas,usually from the same place. Its's a 2004 Road King trike.

    That’s a tuff one to figure out, off the top of my head , with out a backfire happening I would guess a fuel problem Stop at a stealer and maybe a stored code might come up even though the ck eng light is off. Just a guess.

    I had a 2003 FLHRI that did the same thing since new.

    It ended up being the ECM.

    I put a tuner on it and there was no change.

    I even put a tuner with O2 sensors and didn't make a difference.

    Put a new ECM on it and never looked back.

    If you just turn on the ign and a ck eng icon appears , than you got a plug in.

    I had that in a vehicle a few times over the years......Just a shot in the dark here, Start the trike in a dark garage, In neutral cover the headlights to block the light, Once your eyes are adjusted to the dark, Rev the engine while staring at the spark plug wires and see if they are leaking [Arcing] Maybe even move them around a little...

    Yes you can check for codes on a 04

    Is this fuel injected or carb?

    If it is carb, they have been lean TOO LEAN from the factory and will hiccup every now and then

    This can be fixed pretty easy and cheap

    John, have a look here

    The following procedure will instruct in retrieving and clearing ECM Diagnostic Trouble Codes and TSM/TSSM codes through the Harley gauge cluster as well as a list of codes.

    1- Turn Ignition switch to OFF & Run/Stop switch is to Run.

    2- Push odometer reset button in & hold. For 2014 & newer touring models this will be the toggle switch on the left control mount.

    3- Turn ignition switch to Ignition and release the odometer reset button. Background lighting should illuminate, speedometer needle should sweep its full range and indicator lamps (battery, security, low fuel, check engine and cruise) should illuminate. The word "diag" should then appear.

    4 - Push the odometer reset button once and you will see the selection menu "PSSPt" with the first P flashing.

    5 - Each letter represents an area of the diagnostics module. The module that is flashing is the one you are going to check. To move from one letter (module) to the next, you push the odometer reset button one time. (from P to S to SP to t and back to P, etc.)

    P = ECM/ICM(Electronic Control Module)[EFI] /Ignition Control Module[Carbureted])

    S = TSM/TSSM (Turn Signal/ Security Module)

    SP = speedometer

    T = tachometer

    6 - To get the DTC within an area of diagnostics, push and hold the odometer reset button in for 5 seconds and release. If there are any DTC's the code will be displayed or the word "none" will appear if there are no DTC's. Push the odometer reset button again to view additional codes if they exist.

    7 - Record the codes.

    8 - If DTC's are not to be cleared, Press and release the odometer reset button. Part number of module will be displayed.

    NOTE: To determine if a code is current or historic, clear the displayed code by pushing in and holding the odometer reset button ( longer than 5 seconds) until 'clear' comes up. Release the odometer reset button. Turn OFF the ignition switch. Run your bike and shut it down then recheck the DTC's again by repeating steps 1 to 9. If the code is current it will reappear.

    9 - Press and release the odometer reset button to continue to the next module.

    10 - Turn Ignition switch to OFF.

    On models not equipped with a tachometer "No Rsp" will appear when the tachometer identifier is selected.

    "No Rsp" (no response) will also appear if the run/off switch is in the off position when doing this procedure.

    I believe the 2004 still had the old style cam chain tensioners? If so Possibly worn, allowing the timing to jump off occasionally? Also compensator possibly worn? Mine back fired from a worn compensator but only when starting. Just some shots in the dark from afar

    If you plan on keeping this bike, the best thing you can do is get one of the latest and greatest tuners. There are some that will allow you to read codes much easier than the Harley procedure. But I had a 2007 model and had to wait 4 weeks for a new ECM if it turns out to be that. I'm assuming you no longer are under any kind of warranty. I fortunately still had mine under an extended warranty. And personally I would never own a Harley without a warranty unless it is a carb'ed bike. These computer controlled things just scare the heck out of me when it comes to potential electrical problems which this very well may be. Before going too far though I'd change plus and plug wires if you have never done it. They could be the original and you might have wires breaking down and mis-firing.

    Just for grins, check for an intake leak

    Spray some WD40 around the intake flanges see if the engine speed changes

    Over time the seals stop sealing, u pick up some air and you get a lean hiccup
